New to the forum. Questions about buying a used 4runner.

First, I am new to this forum. As much as it pains me to buy anything not made by GM, I cannot deny the unrivaled quality and performance of the 4Runner.

I want to buy used model years 2003-2005, Sport or SR5, 4X4, V-6. I understand that on the 2005 and newer the 5-speed auto is standard and on the 2003 and 2004 it is optional.

Is there an easy way to determine what trans. a particular 4Runner has?

5 speed automatic:

2004 - only 4Runners with V8 engine
2005 - all 4Runners, regardless of engine

Basically, if you buy a V8 4Runner, it will have the 5 speed auto.

Or if you get an '05 or newer 4Runner, it will have the 5 speed auto with either engine.

I'm with ya...
I traded in my 01 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 on an 02 Limited Runner. Damn, I miss that truck, but the Runner is a better deal, better on gas, will probably be less to own in the long run and is probably a better wheeler anyway.

But with that said...

I'm not a big fan of some of the 5 and 6 speed automatic transmissions these days. In my opinion, they shift too damn much, which I guess is what they were designed to do....

But I'm very happy with the 4-speed automatic. In fact, I usually lock out the overdrive gear when I'm tooling around town. It may use a bit more gas that way, but there's less shifting and more engine braking.
