New to the group and looking for advice

I've been lurking around here a while and thought I should introduce myself and my truck. I bought her around July, a 96 SR5 with 130k on the clock. One owne, clean body and interior. I paid 3000 and haven't looked back. There are a few issues I've had and I was looking for some advice. (1) I have a slight starting issue, she cranks for a good couple of seconds before she catches. I checked the battery and it's good, I just replaced the starter because it went out. (2) I have a soft spot in my brake pedal and an odd noise from the master sometimes. The soft spot is right in the middle of the pedal travel. When I brake I feel them Stat catching then after about an inch the pedal feels soft and it feels like the brakes let up, then a little farther down the pedal firms up and the brakes catch just fine. I also noticed, while doing the starter, that there is an odd buzzing(?) noise coming from the master/booster area. The truck had been sitting for about a week at this point. From the other side of the truck it sounded like a swarm of angery bees, from up close it sounded like air slipping through a rubber seal. My wife said she had heard it before when we were moving and the truck was sitting. (3) I need shocks/struts all around. I'd like to add about 2" but I'm looking to stay under 400 for the whole deal. That's pretty much it in a long winded nut shell. Glad to be here, I've already learned alot.

Welcome to the board. Be sure to post up pics of your runner.
1. Check fuel pressure and see if there is a fast drop after shutting it off. If the pressure drops fast then your fuel pump is bleeding down, you have a leaking pressure regulator or a leaking injector. I would start at the fuel pump, check the spark plugs and if worn replace them with new oem plugs. Hope that helps some but you need tools and some mechanical ability.
2. Sounds like you are having a master cylinder issues which is pretty common on 4runners. First check the brake lines and rear cylinders for leaks while there you will see if your axle seals are leaking and soaking the shoes with gear oil. Pump up the brake pedal about 10-15 times with engine off and hold the pedal down. If it starts to sink to the floor you have a bad master cylinder.
3. Best lift on a budget from what i have researched is the OME lift. If you just want it for looks then spacers are cheap
 
i went a similar route with the lift - i purchased bilstein 5100 for the front and reused stock springs (2nd perch) and then bought ome 906 for the rear with two 10mm trim packers. I added the diff drop and it all came out to about $400. Looks great and gave me exactly 2"
 
The buzzing in normal . All early 3'rd gens do it. It's not electrical so it will not run down the battery . I think it's the evap canister or something like that, someone will correct me if I'm wrong. And it sounds like you got a great deal on the the Runner!

Welcome to the group!

As mentioned, please post pics. Even though we all know what a red or green or black 4runner looks like, it's always nice to have a specific picture of a truck in mind to tie to your name :)

starts off in a way that you think you don't need, but does address other peoples' bee situations most especially on page 2. Also, I find it amusing...these people are funny (in a good way). There are a bajillion threads on this subject.
I always thought of it as mooing. Bzzzzz...........wait a bit.....bzzzzzz.........wait a bit........bzzzzz.....Almost sort of kinda miss it in my own 96.

You've checked your maf and cleaned if needed? (non-sequitur of sorts)

Wait til you find out about starter contacts. No, wait, DON'T find out about starter contacts since you've already replaced them gift-wrapped in a starter package.

I'm not sure if I need more or less coffee...

I'm familiar with contacts, just found a good deal on a new one. Plus I didn't have to return the old one so I can fix it up and sell it or have a spare in case of a bad case of my luck.

Any way you could message me on how to test the pressure? I've got tools and pretty good mech knowledge, even if most of it was on humvees. I try and do all my own non emergency work.
