New Torque Converter

So i think ive come to the conclusion that my torque converter is going in my '01. After a 1900mi trip pull a 5500lb load(yes weighed it), and multiple symptoms like delayed engagement from a stop or after coasting AND a few sharp shutters while accelerating(kind of like quick bursts of transmission dissengagement)..i think its time for a new one...by the way if anyone else has had these issues let me know.

However I cant seem to find anything on T4R about recommended brands OR instructions for replacement..anybody see such things? I looked at the FSM and didnt see much

How does the fluid look? I'm thinking the slow engagement from a stop sounds like a solenoid not TC.

To replace the torque converter you have to drop the entire transmission. Bring it to Hawaii and we can r/r that monster in half a day.


But as stated above - it's probably not the TQ but a solenoid problem or worn out clutches ect in transmission. Drain and refill the tranny first and see how it acts. This is not a flush so don't worry about that nonsense.

WRT the transmission removal..im ok with that. Yes it would take the garage for a time, it would get done..

The solenoids are easier Im sure but if I was to replace them, how much we talking?

I have drained/refilled the fluid with no change..I just cant imagine much would change by only pulling out a few quarts, however. Thoughts?

How did the fluid look? I would think solenoids would be at least a few hundred just for the parts. I would replace all 3.

Ive been looking around and have seen that a code gets thrown whenever there are issues regarding the solenoids. Im guessing this is not always the case?

It's possible. It could be that the problem has to occur so many times in a row before it will throw a code. Normally solenoids don't go out unless the fluid gets very burned and full of sediment/varnish or the milkshake happens (the water rusts them in that case). It could be your fluid got pretty well burned and did other damage. Dous may be on the right track with a used tranny replacement.

Ok so my sh*t is making the loose pebble noise, and it doesn't go when I put it in drive or reverse...

I have to force it to 3500 rpm to get her to move.

the TCC solenoid is a common fail on that trans, it's buried deep within the trans. Just a FYI before you do all that work without replacing it, and end up with the same symptom.

Nope on the CEL. I've seen it a couple times personally, exact same symptom. used to have a trans guy who would fix them for $750, but he's since retired. There are three very obvious solenoids on the valve body, the TCC solenoid is above the valve body.
