new trans

I just paid for a "new" w-56 trans to be installed on my 87.
cost me 1900 for trans and break MC.
It has been grinding going into reverse, and sometimes hard to get into first or reverse. Reverse makes a strange noise while backing up.
the old trans didnt do this.
I have a new clutch MC and SC and I adjusted the clutch pedal all the way out, with no improvement.
Did I get a bad Trans? is there a way to know if it is new?
should the clutch been changed? any help

Hmm...was this an official Toyota dealing? Did the trans come with any warranty? If you are running into issues and the thing is supposedly brand new, I'd take it back and see what they do. There is no reason a new trans should be giving you fits. I'd take the truck back and give the shop a chance to make it right.

A 1000 mile warranty? On a supposedly fresh rebuilt transmission? That's horrible. I think you're screwed. Did your guy do the rebuild or did he get it somewhere and just install it?

unless the clutch was virtually new, how did the "expert" not replace it while changing the transmission? and why are you adjusting the clutch master/slave? you paid $1900 to have the transmission installed, that should include adjusting the clutch.

I went back to the mechanic. He said its a 10k mike warranty, and he wanted me to drive it to the parts store that he got the trans from. The guy at the parts store kept saying that he doesn't know a lot about transmissions and that I should just keep driving it. He wouldn't say if it was new or rebuilt.
