So far i luv my new 2006 LTD, but after 5300 miles, i have to say i'm dissapointed that 2 problems i experienced in my 2003 have not been fixed for the 2006...
I still get the damn sulfur smell with the back window down under hard acceleration. Now, if they had a TSB fix in for the 2003's, why on earth would it not be fixed in 2006, and to make it worse, theres a TSB for 2006 too.
Secondly is the thumping of the propellor shaft after an abrubt stop that we had in the 2003's, i think the solution was to fill the fittings in front with extra grease. i also remember that for the Lexus they had a remedy for the shaft thumping via replacing the shaft.
Neither of these are issues that would cause me to sell it, but after thinking about it the other day in traffic, its really kind of ridiculous to think that they would redesign the truck for 06 and not fix these issues that affected so many vehicles since 2003...

When was your '06 manufactured?? I bet that it was probably in late 2005 or early 2006. The official definitive fix for GX470 came out around April 2006.

You can find month/year manufactured by looking at driver's door jam.
 
Theres a TSB for the '05 for hte Sulfur smell and I'm heading in to get that taken care of next week. My dad just got a new '06 and I'm waiting for the TSB for his to get his done. His 06 isn't too bad but its still there.
 
I have wondered the same exact thing. I get the sulphur smell in my '06 too. Perhaps the less-smelly cats are more expensive, but you would think that remedying the problem on the assembly line with the updated cats would counter-balance some of the expense that results from the need for TSB service.

I also see that the problematic sunroof continues to be an issue over the years, which I am concerned about.

I would think that Toyota should have worked out these bugs over four model years.

fortunatley i have not had the sunroof issues, but the shaft thumping is a nusiance, it feels like it moves the car when it hits..
i wonder why Toyota hasn't TSB's this but Lexus has...the last time i tried to get it diagnosed in my '03, the tech said, "oh thats normal, its the differential engaging/disengaging"

The TSB for the excessive sulfur is still around because the problem can't be fixed at the factory under current enviornmental rules.

The modified cat and exhaust pipes that are installed when the TSB is done raises the emission level of the vehicle. Not enough to cause a problem with smog checks or anything, but enough to cause the CAF rating to change inf they did it to all 4Runners. Toyota would then have to reclassify the 4Runner as a mid to high emissions vehicle which would seriously hurt them.

The thump is another story and Toyota really has no excuse as to why it hasn't been fixed on the 4Runner yet.

There is a simple reason why these problems were not addressed. The reason also applies to ALL manufactures. It's a matter of money. If the problem is not a safety issue, the manufacture is going to take the cheapest way out. Pay for redesign, new parts and possibly repair all vehicles that were made (and to be made) or pacify the people who complain with the cheapest BS fix that is just enough to get you to stop crying.

Crying or not I'm really annoyed buy the rear shaft clunk. To the point it's getting sickening. I drive almost all day long so it is wearing on me.
 
The Prado Land Cruiser is essentialy a GX470 with out the V8. You would think toyota would have heard about this issue a long time ago and done something about it with in a year or two from hearing complaints on three different branded SUVs out in the world.

Just a shame.

It's just annoying and embarassing when people are with me. Especially wwhen your bragging about the 4R....lol

No, but I greased those fitting within a week of purchase. This (thump) is a common problem with many trucks. I
