New TrueFlow

Got mine last week, unplugged battery for 10 minutes-resetting ECU. Didn't notice a major increase in power for about 100 miles, but then without question a very very improved hp output. My wife, who didn't know I put it in, commented on how much more umph it had. I am totally sold. By the seat of my pants, it feels about a 20 hp bump, but I'm sure it isn't nearly that...likely 5-10. But it does accelerate much quicker. I love it!
 
About resetting the ECU. If I were to disconnect the battery and reconnect, I would need a security code for my radio. The thing is the previous owner didn't give me one. So how would I be able to get one for my car? Not that I need it, but someday I might.

if its the deck that came with the truck, the dealer has that info.
 
Just an update...I have roughly 700 miles on this filter. I still love it every bit as much as I did when I started this thread. Performance has not dropped off. It's cold as...well you get the idea...so no improvement in throttle response but hasn't fallen off either.

I'm pretty sure at this point any gains you guy's are seeing will stay with you until time to clean the filter.

Can't wait for spring!:dammit:

Are you talking about a security code? My 97 Grand Prix has that feature. It's set by the owner but the Stealership can overide the code if they have to. I just checked my manual and the 02 LTD Six Disc does not have that feature.

Are you sure you have this on a stock radio?
 
true flow

Hey everyone!,,,, I put about 150 miles on the 4Runner with the True Flow installed and really didn't notice much of a change except the sound of the engine was more pronounced from the very first.

I took it to the dealer for the 30,000 mile service and they did their $440 worth and driving home I was shocked. It DID make a difference. I like the higher shift points but hope winding the engine out more doesn't kill the fuel mileage. I stuck my foot in it a couple of times just to see how it felt and was mildly surprised at the new-found power.

Since I just bought the truck in August and haven't driven it much, I thought the acceleration was not very impressive, but wrote it off to being a 6 cylinder truck. Then, the dealer showed me something that might have held it back. Seems the guy that owned it before me drove it through water and then a lot of dust fairly often and the rear brakes were almost completely frozen up and barely worked due to rust and crud in the drums.

After freeing them up and the new True Flow filter,,,, it's ready to roll!
 
How does this filter compare to the amsoil filter? that's what I have, with the deckplate, and I really like it.

It's seems to be much better than the Amsoil. Amsoil ha since contracted someone else to make their filter and it's not made as well. From a guy who had both...

A few years ago I saw a demo of this air filter at the Offroad Expo, but for the life of me I couldn't remember the name brand, so like everyone else I purchased an Amsoil brand. Okay, there's a huge difference in the quality of the Trueflow VS the Amsoil, in relation to construction. I remember Gadget making a post that he didn't like the new design of the Amsoil filter compared to the earlier one???? Then when I saw Charle's filter(older version) I knew why, they really cheapened the design. The Trueflow filter has a solid frame around the foam inner, that took a bit of persuation to get into my air box. It fit very tight, but this is a good thing, unlike the Amsoil that didn't seal well at all. The bottom of the airbox there are spring loaded clips that lock the filter against the housing. The Amsoil's design doesn't clip in at all, thus causing a very poor fit.

How do i know if i have a newwer amsoil filter or an older one? Mine has a pretty stiff surround, and wasn't that easy to wedge in... But do they look different? mine has a blue foam outside, a metal mesh backside, and a black foam front.

Thanks.... I'll have to look into buying one of those TrueFlow's off your website... once i can justify the cost... (after i put like 20,000 miles on my current filter)
 
I bought a True Flow a few weeks ago, and haven't gotten a chance to drive it many times, only one long car trip from L.A. to Vegas. I have to say, I am not noticing the HP boost that others are, and my mileage for the trip was lower than previously (down from 20 to 18). I also found myself struggling to pass people on mild grades in the 80 mph range. (Maybe that's an unfair observation.)

Should I try anything in particular? I figured with the miles to Vegas, I wouldn't have to reset anything. I didn't think I could have installed it wrong on my '01 SR5, but hey, I'm not as familiar as some people here, and I did find it quite difficult to get the filter box lid locked shut. Any thougts?

By the way, I was impressed with the constant updates from Jason B. about the status of the filter - that *was* refreshing customer service.

Lots of different things could be affecting this. Sounds like you make this trip often.

Did you have any extra cargo or passengers?

What's the Temp. been like in your part of the country...have you checked tire pres. recently?

Did you have any wind in the area at all when you made the trip?

I can just tell you basically what I did in my first post...I drive this truck as a DD over the same roads and it made a huge improvement in the overall driveability...Not sure if it has more horsepower or not and really dont care. It's been to 80 once...State Patrol tend to Frown on that kind of prolonged speed around here...Get caught and you could have bought three TrueFlows! You probably at this point will not notice any benefit based on your post.

BTW...The lid fits very tight...Sounds like you installed correctly.

Anyone else care to chime in here?
 
I've watched the tire pressure, but I think they are cupped pretty bad from the suspension I just replaced. (That was the case before the filter as well, though.) I bet I'll notice it more on the day to day stuff. Sounds like I just haven't had enough time with it.

The weight/environmental conditions were about the same. Just a little colder.

You aint gettin no 20 MPG drivin 80...

You'll lose roughly 1 pound of air for every 10 degrees of Temp. drop. That's cold pounds. When you drive after several miles you will gain two or so pounds back but you have still lost that initial pound...

I'm not baggin on ya here, just trying to help. Check your tires and get back to us and on your regular roads.
 
i do know that tire pressure is affected by the temperature. i have been making sure the pressure is OK, but i'm sure it being colder on that trip made a difference in my tires.

actually, on the latest tank of mostly highway driving i got 18mpg, at speeds around 80. so not bad in more common temperatures.

Cool...Have you noticed any improvement on your In Town Driving?

It's going to be hard to tell across the board if folks have noticed any improvement this time of year with the cold.
 
Need a little help with my TrueFlow.

Hey folks. I finally got my TrueFlow filter yesterday that had been on backorder for a while and I could not get it installed. I know it sounds stupid but I tried everything that I could and I could not get it to go down far enough for the lid to close. I tried forcing it, prying it in, everything. The filter is just barely not fitting uinder the lip below the lid that the filter should fit under. I had to put my K&N filter back in and was a little disappointed in the whole ordeal. I am not a complete noob at this stuff as I have had a stock filter, K&N FIPK, and currently a K&N filter. But I have never had this problem before.

Does anyone have any advice or hints? I am ready to start using my nice new filter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
