Newbie signing on, and 3rd Gen power question

Hey guys, it's great to finally be a part of the board, it's been helping me shop for 4Runners. I've just purchased a 2000 Limited and am loving it!

Question for you... I'm pretty sure this is not normal... If I turn off the ignition and pull out the key, the radio and clock remain powered. Obviously I can turn the radio off, but I'm worried one of these days I'll forget and kill the battery. I don't suppose the clock could ever draw enough power to kill the battery.

I guess I'm looking for confirmation that something strange is going on here before I start tearing it up. Any similar experiences? If this were an aftermarket deck I'd say they'd reversed the ACC and direct battery wires, but since it's stock...

Anyway, glad to be a member, and thanks in advance for any responses!

have you waited to see how long the power stays on? many modern cars maintain power for a short period of time after you switch off the ignition — mainly for the windows. This way if you forget to pull your window up all the way, or shut the power off while the window is still going up...there is still power to complete the operation. Maybe this affects the radio as well, somehow.

That is strange. My radio and clock go off. (My clock is separate from the radio) I am wondering if the radio is a after market radio or a new stock radio, if so maybe they wired it differently. :dunno:

I am a little confused about the clock, how do you turn off the clock?

The clock is separate...the one sitting between the air vents. It doesn't turn off. So now that we've confirmed this is odd, anybody have previous experience with this?

If it is a aftermarket radio odds are it was wired directly to the battery/ACC.

If it is a factory radio is it maybe like my Corvette the radio will stay powered untill you open the door which will kill the radio?

If this does not help at least I gave you a "bump"

It is the Toyota Radio. It does not turn off with opening of door, or with any amount of waiting time. It looks like I'll be tearing into the dash this weekend to figure out what the deal is. Anybody have any good resources for me?

huh, weird.. maybe the previous owner played stupid and didn't use a wiring harness with an aftermarket radio, and then reconnected the stock harness and screwed up somehow..
