Newbie with a 3gen

My Aunt just gave me a 97 4Runner, she gave up on it when mechanics tried to roll her for 2000.00 after she spent 800.00 on water pump & timing belt. So I'm starting fresh with a used 98 engine with 97kmiles on it & new water pump and timing belt. They gave my Aunt back the truck with everything in the cargo area! Dismantled heads, intake mani, exhaust mani, radiator, hoses, and everything else you can think of. But there was no air filter box to be found, and had to buy used one. Is there a way to clean the maf sensor without messing it up. Figured that since its used I should clean it up before install, also wanted to clean up cause I noticed little oil residue in it.
Any ideas on what else I should do before getting everything in...in put in a new valve cover gasket set and motor looks very clean.

i remember when i put an intake on my 2007 focus it had a MAF sensor, and i cleaned it by pulling it out and getting some brakes parts cleaner or rubbing alcohol and a cuetip(not sure on spelling) and gently wiped the little sensor thats in there and never had a problem with it, just have to be careful not to break it...i dont know how fragile it is

I would do search for "cleaning MAF" on this forum before you touch it with anything physical since they break easily and you'd rather not spend the money to replace it.

Sounds like you have a great project leading to a great rig !

Thanks for the welcome and the response, looking at the maf and the sensor is inclosed well going to try the CRC sensor cleaner and blow it with some compressed air gently.

Thanks I'll do just that.....as far as the project I'm excited, just got out of the slammed import gig and now on to higher more rugged scene.

Great link, just need to check again if the 3gen sensor can be screwed off like that. Hmmm.

no compressed air the cleaner does the work and be generous on the spray there is a reason there is a big can for such a small sensor and just let it sit and dry out for a minute.
