Hello there I am getting ready to buy my first 4runner and need help with the drive options. Here's my question, do they offer the standard 4x4 ie 2H/4H 4L and a AWD with just 4H 4L? and if so how do I tell the differance by just looking at pictures?

Looking at the 3rd gen's 97 to 01. There's a lot out there just need to find the color and $$ once I figure out the 4x4 thing. While looking at some in pic's it looked like on the shifter that the only choice was 4H or 4L. I wasn't sure if they offered an AWD or not.

If the 3rd generation has this configuration it has 4WD

Thanks alaskaman I know those had to sound like stupid questions but I need to make sure before buying one out of state and then ending up with one thats AWD. Not what I want. Have you seen or heard of an AWD model?

I believe that in 2003 the V8 is designed to run as an AWD.

Alright does this photo mean that this runner is an AWD with only 4H and 4L. Sorry to keep harping on this issue just trying to learn all I can from the guys that drive them all the time. Photo is of a 98 limited

Alright may have answered my own question. Does the button on the side of the gear shift engage the 4x4 in 4H and also disengage back to 2H.

Cruiser, when you have that lever in "H" without the 4WD button pushed in, you have it in 2WD. "N" disengages the transfer case, giving no power to any of the wheels. "L" denotes L4 range, where you must FIRST put the drive lever in "N" and then shift the 4WD lever to "L", then put the drive lever back into "D".

To engage 4WD while in motion (at speeds up to 60 MPH) just keep the 4WD lever in "H" and depress the "4WD" button on the side of the 4WD lever.

At least in my 2002, the 4WD system could technically be described as an AWD model, because you can drive in 4WD mode in all conditions (wet dry etc) thanks to the center differential. Locking the center differential then turns it more into a 4WD truck than just depressing the "4WD" button

Thanks KellyJ I have a 87 pu that has the old front locking hubs and the shifter on the inside is the 2H 4H 4L so when I saw the new style I was unsure if it was AWD or not.
