I try to help out fellow 4runners here on the forum, no matter their generation. Theres no need to be biased, but knowing my generation is the best is all I need to remember.

Some of the 5th genners need help changin oil, I tell them.
Some of the 5th genners need help knowing about brakes, I tell them.
Some of the 5th genners need help bypassing backup camera to be on whenever they want, WHAT THE **** IS A BACKUP CAMERA!!

Iv never had to deal with 5th gen owners even tho id be glad to help. But I'm with you, our 3rd gens are the best. Newer generations have so much fancy crap I don't want. Like your ******* back up cameras ^ Haha
 
I will admit, I do like using the backup camera on the wife's minivan. Although, that still hasn't helped my wife NOT back into things!

I just hate the luxurization of the SUV.
I rage everytime I read an SUV review and the reviewer complains about a "no frills interior" or negativley compares it to a "truck".
I hate how few full size SUVs are still available with manual trans. (Xterra is the only one that I know of that can actually go offroad well enough.)

SUV. SPORT . UTILITY. VEHICLE....

there are very few true SUV's left , most of them tend to be this girly cross over crap, and it pisses me off, i want a 4 door truck without a bed in the back as i have no need for one, that's what the SUV is ment to be, but i agree that they are falling more and more into the cross over territory, i wish manufactures would make clear lines in the sand over whats an suv vs a crossover, blending the two makes both platforms suck for their intended uses ....give me a good proper SUV and im game....

I agree with everything you said, but I am not going back to manual shifting, lol. That is the only luxury item I need on the 4runner though.
 
For the most part, but not to all who purchase a 5th gen, if one has that kind of money to spend on a new car, truck, crossover, etc., then they have the latitude to allow someone else do the maintenance. But I give anyone props who is willing to learn, even if it makes them seems noobish while asking the most basic questions. For the older gens, including to some degree the 4th, learning to DIY repair or fix problems allows for the 4runner to retain its value while keeping some green in the wallet.
 
In my frank opinion, even the 3rd gen is pretty watered down when it comes to utility and "truck-ness." IMO, Toyota got it right the first time and has only made the Runner (and Land Cruiser) more soccer-mom-mobile than truck with every update.

Is that the 1st Gen that was for sale a while ago for some crazy amount of money? The picture looks familiar.
I miss my 85 SR5 4x4 pickup....couldn't find a 1st gen worth buying around here.

When my wife was looking for a new vehicle, she disregarded the 5th Gen 4Runner as too huge, and the FJ Cruiser as too "bare bones-no frills". She wanted an SUV with all the bells and whistles. So she bought an Escape. Now there's a watered down SUV if ever there was one. Her money, so her choice.

Me, I just keep on soldiering on with my 200K+ '97 Limited daily with two bells and no whistles. Now I just need to find a 4x4 3rd Gen or a 1st Gen Tacoma for a plaything. Oh and I have fixed the rear sag in the avatar. Been too dang lazy to take a new photo.
 
I found that picture on google, but it did look like it was from a for sale ad.

I'm not hating on the 3rd gen, or any 4runner for that matter, but I just like the simple no-nonsense solid axle, leaf sprung, 4banger trucks. I've seen pretty much bone stock pre-86 trucks go places that some newer trucks wouldn't dream of without a bunch of money in upgrades.

I'm pretty stoked on my 5th gen and like every other car I've ever had, I plan on doing any and all work on it myself (unless it's a warranty issue or something).

I know a lot of people hate on the 5th gen, but they're the 1st 4runner that's really appealed to me since the 1st gen. I like the boxiness of them, and I LOVE the way they look with a lift and some tires.
Backup cameras and heated seats are nice, but beside the point. :boink:

I see no need to hate 5th gens. Im not crazy about how low the front and rear bumpers sit. But I still think its a nice looking SUV. And its still a solid rear axel. And you can get them with front and rear locking diffs right from the factory. So despite all the added tech and luxury features, its still an off road truck at the roots

I agree. The 1st gen is cool, IMO the perfect trail rig. 85 SFA EFI <3

But, for those who don't want to drive a rickety dinosaur every day, who actually need to drive other people around and look presentable along with their utility, skip the 2nd gen (torsion rods, 3.slow, butt sag, etc), the 3rd gen does that well without turning into mommy's plastic/electronically controlled 4th gen automatic. It's widely known that 3rd gens feel like trucks (read the million reviews online, the women all complain about it), my mom's 4th gen feels like a plastic station wagon that's been jacked into the air.

Toyota 4Runner:
1st gen SFA: Awesome. Slow, way too simple. Trail rig by all means! Try overtaking ANYONE on the freeway, LOL good luck.
1st gen IFS/2nd gen: All of the good aspects of the 1st gen have been neutered. Mechanically stupid (bad 3.0 engine, torsion rod/leaf suspension)
3rd gen: Coil/4 link suspension, much better engines, better interior, presentable and certainly still feels like a truck. Locker and scoop make the deal sweet. Interior is nice, but not "OMFG YOU GOT THE FLOOR MAT DIRTY" nice.
4th gen: Way too refined. Too much plastic, too many electronics, too much fluff and nothing but stupid auto trans. Hence why I bought one for my mom. She loves driving to Target in it, she can see over people in traffic. She can fit all of the groceries in the back at once, and she's got a backup camera since she can't park.
5th gen: Soccer mom mall crawler... if you want to piss away $40g on a trail edition, be my guest. Enjoy your automatic and silly electronic assists. Make sure not to track any dirt inside or scratch it. Nice engine, too many electronics. Gas pedal feels way too weird, drive by wire sucks. Sure does great on the road, Karen is really jealous because the 17" wheels on her SR5 aren't as shiny as the 20"s on Patty's Limited.

Of course, modify any one of these and end up with a sweet ride. Just consult the rest of the forum's builds.

3rd Gens are the last ones that will never ever be confused with a Minivan!

Some 5th Gen owners (not to name names) dont know they have 3rd row seating and NO cargo space! No joke I had to show them! lol
