Newer OEM Toyota Radio in 3rd Gen

Do any of you have experience using the DVR functionality of this unit? I would love to enable a dash cam via this system and the DVR function would be key.

It would boil down to how much internal memory the unit you choose has. Most of them (as do the ones i have) will require you use the on board, external micro sd for DVR and Map storage. There are ones on ebay now already set up with DVR dash cam capability and cameras installed and included. Just search "android double din" on ebay...lots of different choices.

LOL... Ouku, and Pumpkin are brand names, but the units I like are the double din ones running android software. Basically a smart phone in your dash. you can go to play store and download apps, they do nav, games, dvd, hot spot, wifi, rear camera, touch screen, color changing lights, anything your android phone will do and more. Super easy to set up, just need a Metra wiring harness adapter for your truck and it's pretty much plug and play. Just shop around for the ones running the latest version of android, and pick a face/button style. Stay away from the windows units. You can find them from 150.00 to 300.00 depending on what you want.

I have them in three different cars and they have all been working flawlessly for a couple years now.

My brothers Jetta was almost totaled for a 30 dollar Walmart stereo.

That's really no surprise though, and a "VW Thing". Hell many a VW has taken out an OBD-II scan tool, all from having an aftermarket stereo installed. Just plain out odd, but a "normal" VW thing.

Stay away from the windows units.

Someone stolen the radio out of his Jetta. Hacked up the dash bad. That's why it was almost totaled during the insurance claim.

Oh that makes sense. I've seen a few cars totaled for that actually, Dash damage can incur a ton of repair hours. Most usually in the 8-12 hours + parts. Gets expensive really really quick.

I have one from a 13 highlander had to trim the bezel, get an adapter for the antenna and clip the wire for the power antenna. The connectors are the same. Dont know if I would call it a cheaper option though. If you have questions I’d be willing to help.

Were you able to make the BT work ? I kind of like the OEM look, somehow my mind thinks that an OEM deck wouldn't be as much of a prize to a thief as an aftermarket deck might. I'm weird like that...

The BT mic is simply buying one and plugging it in. It's around 57 dollars at the dealer.

I've had a T1819 scion radio and now a 2013 Corolla with NAV and Entune in my 97.

Reviving an old thread?

Trying to do a similar mod. The Prius C head units look mighty similar to the aforementioned highlander one and the Scion T10015. Would one of them work as a replacement for the original in a '99 Limited?

If the measurements are the same as the two I installed in my 97, You have to cut and modify for any of them. Buy the adapter plugs and go to it. I think those are standard across all their radios.

My 97 SR5 build and repair thread shows what needs modified in the dash etc. to make the larger factory radios fit.

Quick question- When you installed the 2013 Highlander head unit, did you connect if with the single connector coming from your 4runners factory premium amp or did you bypass the premium amp and use the 2 connectors that originally went to the amp?

You have to remove the amp and use two Toyota adapter connectors. Toyota makes two connectors to adapt new radios to older vehicles.

Also good info is the 2013 Corolla NAV unit has the XM radio built into it. All you need is a antenna for it. It’s all in one.

The T1819 is 300w and sounds awesome and it was my first install. But I wanted a NAV unit. Eventually I want to upgrade to the 2016 and up NAV unit.

Edit. There is a section for audio and in it is a thread titled something like The Ultimate Scion Head Unit Thread. In there you will find probably too much info. But it will give cable adapter numbers etc. my build and repair thread goes over me installing the T1819 in my 97. There is zero difference installing that or a factory NAV unit. I have some cable numbers also.

I would think about putting a alarm system in to prevent some one breaking into the car. You could get a radio from a wrecking yard for cheap or look for one on craigslist or other sights. There are places that repair auto radios if you want to get one fixed.:bluejump:
