Hello all, I am 19 and from NJ. I'm going to be a sophomore in college and drive a 2007 V8 4Runner that I got as a Christmas gift from my parents. In the end I contributed 5k towards it. I absolutely love it; however, I do have a question regarding the future of it.
My mom drives a 2004 LC that is coming off of lease next summer. The buyout on it is 19k....it can and probably will be less. It will have approximately 80-90k highway miles on it with a flawless service record. My mom decided to get a second one after her 99' provided 90k of service-free miles. She will be getting an 09 next summer because she absolutely loves it and needs the safety of it on the highway (78) for her daily trips to work. I was thinking if it is worth trading in the 4R in for the LC. Here is my rationale:
Why the LC:
-It's absolutely indestructible, everything on it is 4x the size necessary....it will last for years. Just looking underneath at the bulk of the components used clearly dictates what its uses are for. The front arms come to my immediate attention and looking on the road, they are the biggest that I have ever seen
-I feel it drives nicer on the road, handles potholes without even batting an eye more stable on the highway...this could be used to the awful stock tires.
-If I ever have the woolly to off road, I will have no problems whatsoever.
-Its bigger, I hate tiny cars, not that the 4Runner is tiny.
-Side airbags, 4R doesn't have that.
-It's a legend
Why the 4R:
-Much faster than the LC, corners very well with the X-Reas Suspension
-Brand new, only 14k miles on it
-Looks more aggressive I think.
-Will handle all the off road that I will likely throw at it.
-Wont have to convince my parents to allow me to do it.
-Recently put a 3k audio system in it...some of it can be removed like subs/amps.
Just wondering what your thoughts are regarding this. Based on the re-sale of the 4R, I will be no money out of pocket on the trade-in; however, it's not my money, its my parents. I know they will have a tough time justifying my reasoning. I feel that if I continue to do well in school, and perhaps improve, they will have no trouble allowing me to do this.
Just remember that this will take place next summer. I just feel that I have the opportunity to get a vehicle that is "better" than the one I have with no loss of $$.
Keep in mind that I do not off road at all, but it looks like something that could be a lot of fun and something that I could get into. Not necessarily hardcore expeditions but just having the confidence off road is priceless.
