Now, my definition of "minority" is probably quite different than most. Let me explain with an example first:

Let's say I have a group of 100 people on an island. They are all the same race, same sex, same color tone, same build, same everything, except IQ. Ten of those people are morons (IQ below 68) and although they can function (barely) they will be teased and ostracized by the remaining 90 fully capable adults.

Now I have the same situation on the island only my ten special people have an IQ of 200, way above the other 90 people. I will have the same results.

Now on that same island I now have 10 people that were born with various birth defects. Same thing.

Now on the island I have 10 that have a different skin color. Again, we get the same thing.

Human nature will dictate how we are in certain environments. Trust me, if you are different than the norm you will be treated that way and it's not a pretty sight. Can we change human nature? Sure we can. After 30 more generations or so we should be good to go lol but time is the only way to change things.

How does a stupid engineer know these things? I was born with a birth defect. I had two clubbed feet to the point that I walked on my ankles. 47 years ago the treatment was to wear the "polio" braces (you know - black heavy shoes, metal braces going down to knees and ankles, clinked when you took a step, etc) and the normal kids in elementary school treated me like I had Ebola. Sure, there were a few compassionate ones but the vast majority was the Ebola treatment for me. Funny thing was the people who showed me the most compassion were the outcasts like myself.
Yeah, I paid attention to that.

My point is we ALL are like that. You might say you have no racial bias but so what. How would you feel if you were in the majority on that island and ten people moved in with horrendous painful birth defects and they moaned and cried all the time? How about if on that island you had to deal with a group of minority people who were blind and they asked for your assistance - every. single. hour. of. every. single. day. to help them, then cussed you out if you said you had things to do for yourself? What if those blind people spit on you and hated you just because you could see and they can't? They would say "It's my RIGHT for you to feed me, house me, clothe me, assist me!

Sure, that's an extreme example that won't happen and hey, you might have the compassion of Jesus and be able to handle that. How about the other 89 people in the majority though? Yeah, me too.

I've read and re-read this post several times trying to understand your point.

Is it essentially that the generality of human nature is responsible for discrimination towards specific groups?

I agree with that. A few bad apples...

No not a few bad apples, we are ALL bad apples depending on the place and time. We ALL discriminate in some shape or form based on something. You play any team sports or watch any team sports? Example: You are getting ready to pick teams for a sport. You know nobody but you are one of the team captains who will pick your squad. You see an old fat guy and a young tall well built guy. Who do you pick? Never mind the old fat guy might be much better you pick based on appearance. That's discrimination in a mild form. We all do it, every single one of us. Sure, some of us think race is irrelevant and I count myself as one of them but that is only one small piece of the discrimination world that we live in. When you can truly see your fellow humans in all shapes, forms, colors, intelligence levels and other things that make us different as completely EQUAL then you will be a person that does not discriminate. Until then you are just like the rest of us poor slobs, judging a book by it's cover and continuing to judge once that book is open.

I agree with what you're saying, I just hope you're not making the leap that because "we all discriminate in one way or another" (general/generic truth) that it somehow validates or excuses situations (specific/racial) when it's clearly wrong to do so. Or that it makes the latter equal to the former. We've all broken a law, we're not all murderers.

No not at all and no leap here. My whole point is we all discriminate every day based on a whole host of things. Color of skin is just one in a whole litany of reasons. I discriminate against people who think they don't discriminate against people...

I heard NYC marchers on TV last week shouting, "kill the police." The media is stirring the pot.

I hope all the police officers who frequent this thread stay safe. It seems their efforts are not very appreciated lately. Wait, who was it they called last week in Sydney to rescue the hostages? Al Sharpton?
 
I agree the media is fueling the fire.

Forget the dumbass hashtags about police lives or black lives...ALL lives matter.
 
I searched online from 5 different news agencies about the officers killed in NYC and not a single one mentioned race. Apparently that doesn't matter if a cop gets killed but when a black teen is killed after assaulting an officer al Sharpton needs to get involved and take over the media.

Hard to keeps things equal when everyone shouts hate crime or violence against a black teen but if it's violence against a white person it gets put on page 8.

So Mike Brown was shot by a cop. The guy in NY who was taken down by the police died. Here's what I see out of those 2 events. NOTHING and I mean NOTHING would have happened to those 2 men if they simply had not broken the law. Somehow in society today we ALWAYS seem to miss that point. How the Hell does that happen???

I don't consider myself a prejudice person but the actions of the black community are swaying my feelings. Honestly, I'm SO F-ing sick of EVERYTHING being someone elses problem, issue, or fault. Where's the accountability???

As for the Cops in NY....damn. What can I say? Just an absolute tragedy and a shame.

WTF is wrong with people?? What is wrong with the black community? What kind of mindset is out there that this kid did what he did?? Garbage, just pure garbage.

I agree to a point however there are bad apples in every bunch that are drawing lots of media attention. I think the media is trying to start a war out there.

I agree wholeheartedly with the dissappearance of personal responsibility and being held accountable for those decisions.

One officer was asian, the other latino if you were genuinely curious.
 
Just read an updated article and it had that information. Thank you I was wanting to know if that's why it never mentioned race.


Here's from the article.....

Record in Cobb County, Ga., show Brinsley was arrested in July 2011 in connection with alleged violent offenses. He was charged with felony possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm, obstructing a police officer, criminal damage of property and theft by receiving, according to records in Cobb County Court

He also says "take one of ours let's take two of theirs" before he kills 2 police officers. Wonder way police use excessive force or fear their lives. Its because people like this pos exist


Sounds like an awesome guy. Couldn't imagine why he had trouble with police.

I wonder if they'll be the same protesters sitting in at mall of America or disrupting traffic in socal or if al Sharpton will rally all his troops for those officers and the one who was just fatally shot in Florida like he did for the black men who were killed. Seeing as he says we are all equal and all.
