No label on timing belt

Thanks for the heads up, but I think after doing "a lot" of research online and on this site, I'm going to start calling around and have someone who knows what they're doing install the TB for me. When I start dealing with lining up cam marks and "top dead center" things, I can only imagine me getting something wrong and totally destroying my engine. If I can find someone to do it for around $800-$1000, I'll be happy.

Thanks

It's understandable to have a little anxiety tearing into a job like this, but honestly getting the timing marks lined up is extremely easy.

If you get the Mitsuboshi belt it has white marks that line up with the crank and cam marks, and you'd have to be blind to screw it up. :fish:

This job is more of a challenge because of the number of things you need to remove than being actually technically difficult. The worst part of the whole job is probably getting the A/C compressor loosened up to get the belt off, and then getting the crank pulley off. Both of those are very manageable with the right tools.

But at the same time there's always the possibility of breaking or stripping a bolt, or something else going wrong, and a pro will be better equipped to deal with that for sure.

You nailed it on the head with that. I called the Toyota dealership and they wanted $1100, no way that is going to happen. I've contacted yourmechanic.com, they come out to your house and do the work with you. They quoted me $664 with parts or $220 with me buying the kits. I think that's a pretty good deal, not sure how the work will be, but they get good reviews and are ASE qualified. Another mechanic shop quoted me $880 included parts and labor, that's better too.

I think I'm going with the yourmechanic.com and just buy a kit of OEM Toyota parts of Ebay and pay the $220 and still end up about $600 in. I can also assist with the install so I'll learn something too.

I'm going against the stream to say you can wait.

I've read of original timing belts make it over 200k miles. A lot of people get them to go for 100k-150k with no issues.
I replaced the 2nd TB on my 4Runner and it had 200K on it. I don't recommend it though.

I'd definitely want to buy the parts myself, so I know what's going in there. $220 for the labor sounds almost too good to be true, but I don't personally know anything about their business model so I couldn't say for sure.

Yea I recommend doing it yourself if you have the basic knowledge. there is so much info out now just read up and take your time. I was super nervous doing mine but that was 60k miles ago and it been trouble free. Just plan on spending a day or two for the job. It took me like 8hrs since I was going slow and resting and watching install videos and looking at guides. made my own tool to hold engine.

Plan on spending around $300 on a kit. something like this looks good

I just had mine done by a friend of a friend. I bought the kit off ebay, and paid him $300 to put all the parts in and change/refill the radiator. Total about $750.

I looked at all the old parts, and definitely the weak part looks like the water pump. There was a slow coolant leak that I couldn't find, and the coolant looks like it was pushing out through the gasket.

Mine was the same way, and it seems to be pretty common. The gasket around the pump is pretty small.

You can see in this pic where the gasket had started to fail. Mine had 200k on it when I replaced everything, and as far as I can tell it hadn't been changed since the 80k mile service.

That's the kit I would buy, just to make sure it'll all be correct.

Don't I have to buy a crank bolt? I read someone's post that it's a one time use item, so I'd have to buy a new one when I reinstall it. True?

Thanks

You're supposed to, but many reuse it. It's fairly cheap (~$5), and given that it's torqued to 236ftlbs seems like a no-brainer.
