No more V8s, no more buying 4runner

I can't believe all the whining over the lack of a V8;relax it will return ... My first impression of the 4th gens was disappointing ... but it improved immensely just over the first 3 years.

I agree. I had a 2000 3th gen and it was 2006 before I was willing to get a 4th gen to replace it. And still, I liked the 2000 better than the 2006, except for the drive train. The seats were more comfortable, the interior layout made better use of space, and the materials and fit and finish were better. I clearly felt the 2006 was a "cheaper" vehicle. Then again, the drive train was far better and it didn't cost any more than my 2000.

But now my 2006 is four years old and has a bunch of miles, and I don't really want to wait until 2013 to replace it, so the idea that Toyota might get it fixed by then is not so much comfort.

I know the whining won't help this year - but maybe next...

The V6 looks impressive, especially after the torque thread on this forum and I would have been fine with it, I'd just have to tell some friends "no" when it came to towing.

My complaint about the lack of the V8 is that the 4R weighs 400lbs more... Christ, if you're going to do that at least give me the option of the V8.

I am plenty pleased with my non VVti 4.7l in a F/T 4WD... But, if I'm going to shell out some coin to replace a perfectly good truck, give me a better V8.

Been a long time since I've been here. Just wanted to chime in and say I will be holding out for the 4.6 also. I can't imagine that Toyota doesn't have that in the works, but...I guess it wouldn't surprise me too much if they didn't. I think the new one looks real nice, but I will keep my 03 V8 for now! I could write a book about how happy I have been with my 03.

Definitely not going to let Toyota win on this one. Either a 2009 V8 or a 2009 Lexus GX470. Or better yet, wait and not spending any money on Toyota until they offer the 5.7L V8 with the new 6-spd auto in 2011. I think Toyota just lost 50% of the 4runner sales in 2010 by not offerring a V8.

What were they thinking? offerring a 4 instead of a V8. Can you even move the 4runner with a 4?

They will never offer the 5.7L in the 4Runner. The new 4.6L, likely.

Not likely but it is costing them some business but probably not what would be perceived on a forum like this. There's more 4th gen V6 Runners out there than V8s and most of the V8s are underused. I don't think the lady with the '07 V8 equipped Runner across the street from me even knows or cares what's under the hood.

Actually '08 was the worst sales year for 4Runners totaling not even 48,000 unites sold which was down almost 50% from the previous year and it will be interesting to see the '09 figures so really we should be glad Toyota is offering a 5th gen and still equipped for going off road instead of turning it into another glorified Highlander or something.

2009 is going to be the worst ever, we are only at 13,127 units September YTD.

IMO, a V8 4Runner took too many sales away from the GX470. If they put the new 4.6L in a 2010 4Runner, it would probably be too similar to the Lexus (minus a few luxury appointments).

Toyota made a great mistake not putting the 5.7L V8 in the new 5th generation. Now my only option is to buy a Sequoia to enjoy the latest advancement in V8 and 6-speed AUTO.

Given the supersonic nose dive in sales of 4Runners from their high of just over 100 K units to probably around 15-16K units or so this year we should consider ourselves fortunate that Toyota did offer a 5th Gen 4Runner at all.

I too am of the opinion that Toyota will offer a V8 R4unner sometime after the introduction of the 5th Gen. When is anyone's guess.

Ouch. Some of that might be due to the changeover to the 5th gen, but the YTD sales are painful as well.

I can't believe that no one here realizes that the new CAFE regulations are forcing V8 engines out NOT Toyota. The Obama adminstration will force most SUV's out of the realm of possibilities very soon. Unless someone comes up with a 35mpg SUV.

Those are phasing in over time. I don't believe there is a significant change for the 2010 model year, but I've been wrong before...

As far as I know, the CAFE standards don't come into effect until 2016. That's a re****ed long time, even for the leviathan automotive industry.

Besides, who doesn't support innovation and ingenuity?
