There used to be an transmission eco/pwr mode switch in older vehicles, I had it on my 04 taco. Switch said "ECT" and when pressed the dash would say "POWER".
I believe when switching between normal and "S" Mode shifting, this performs a similar function. Keeps the tranny locked up more and at higher revs.
Also, if you really hammer the throttle, even in normal shift mode, it also goes into a power mode where you'll notice that even backing off to a lighter throttle the RPMs will be kept above 2500 until you really let off on the gas and then it drops back to eco mode with RPMs kept at about 2k or below.
So I think the eco/power modes are there fully alive and well, just that they automatically switch now in some cases rather than being completely manual like before. And instead of a switch, you use the shifter to go into "S" mode if you want to do it manually.
