no power in reverse

I was getting ready to clean mud from under my truck after wheeling I had a ramp under each wheel and tried to back onto the ramps, I gave it some gas then more and more all the way to the floor but no go! I then put it into 4lo and it went right up
is this normal?
I see this as a potential problem if I get nose down into a ditch
I tried a quick search and one thread said he had more power in reverse.
could this be a transmission problem starting?
I have a 05 v8 sport
thanks in advance

does the transmission drive normal in all other gears? i dont know about toyota transmissions since i have never seen one apart. but most light duty automatics use shift bands and reverse uses the 1-2 shift band, have you noticed any slipping or lazy shifts?

the transmission seems good the rest of the time
sometimes it holds on to 4th but usually goes in after I cruse for a bit

VSC de-throttled the engine to control wheel slip. Pushing the pedal to the floor only ensures that it will stay that way. That's why it went right up in low range.

You might have been able to goose it up the ramps gently in hi range, but low range works so well and gives so much control I always shift into it before going up ramps.

Yah I think that was me, or at least I do have a thread out there about this which didn't yield any answers.

Was your engine revving higher and higher as you depressed the accel pedal ? If so, that doesn't sound like the engine was de-throttled.

For me this is exactly what is was like. Nothing felt abnormal, it was the guy who was trying to pull me out who was like "why aren't your wheels spinning?".

There was no vsc de-throttle, no odd dashlights or wierd noises. The shifter was in reverse but it was like the transmisson was in neutral. Drive would spin the tires but reverse wouldn't and I was stuck with the frame jacked up on snow so it's not like there was alot of force required to spin the tires.

I don't know what was up and as soon as I got unstuck reverse worked great plus I've been stuck a multiple times since then and it hasn't happened again.

If the OPs engine was revving, that's something different, of course, but the engine shutdown is so common and predictable I assumed that's what he experienced.

It's real easy to duplicate with the right conditions. Stick the front wheels in an icy depression with the rears on ice too (something that can be gotten out of with diff locked) and try to back out. The wheels start to spin, the brakes briefly pulse followed by engine shut down. Hold the accelerator down and there's almost nothing. Sometimes with the pedal held down there are somewhat rythmic attempts spaced a few seconds apart to put power to the wheels which briefly initiates brake pulsing quickly followed by the engine being de-throttled again.
