No reverse, Neutral acts as first??

Well after days and days of searching forums with no luck, I finally registered and am looking for some advice..

I have a 98 2wd automatic 4runner (198xxx miles), last week the wife ran the kids to the bus stop for school and when she returned said there was no reverse in the truck. Its never slipped or shown any problems. Fluid was half qt low, after adding fluid still nothing.. When in reverse it feels like its in park, in neutral it'll pull but never shift almost like its in 1st, drive and all other gears fine.. Undone linkage and tried to manually shift thinking my problem was there but same issues. Help please...

Your shift linkage moved.

It's a 12mm nut, drivers side of the transmission.

You'll see what I'm talking about when you get under the truck and look.

Loosen the nut, and adjust as needed. Tighten the nut.
 
Loosen the nut at the bottom of the shifter. Move the control shaft all the way to the rear then push it forward to notches which is the neutral position. Move the shifter to "N". With the shifter slighty towards "R" tighten the nut at the bottom of the shifter.
 
That was the first thing i tried after checking fluid. Even with the linkage off and trying to shiftit in reverse from underneath it did nothing
 
hey guys. im wondering if you ever resolved your problem. I have the identical problem and checked all the same things you did. I bought my 4runner with (a bad transmission) i drove it over an hour home no problems. just has this same issue. its a 2002 sport.

Any codes for the transmission, check the atf fluid at operating temp. put the truck in L and see if there is any slippage. There is a reverse brake on the Ist gear that engages when the shifter is at L and not at D. Also you can disconnect the solonoids from the transmission and manually shift the runner to see if you have any slippage. there is a test per the fsm.If you got it at a good price with a bad Trans then a salvaged Trans cheaper option or a rebuild unit could be an option.
 
If the gear selection shifter is off one position in all gear, it's the linkage. Get under the truck, disconnect the rod from the shifter and give it a good tug (with the engine off, mind you). That is park. Reconnect the shifter and drive to test.

That would mean you're also "parking" in Neutral. Try pushing the truck when it's in "Park" and see if it rolls. Obviously, don't do this next to a hill...
 
I dont have much of a back story on the vehicle. I know that he said he did a transmission flush. whether that was before or after the issue I dont know. It seems to barely go into park (like when you select park, its still in a forward gear but the parking pawls grab it and stop it from moving). When the vehicle is in reverse it feels as tho its in park. Every other selection is a forward gear. This is all the same while manually shifting under the truck with the linkage disconnected. I have a transmission sourced for it already because I figured it just lost the reverse gear. But after monkeying with it, I wanted to make sure it wasnt something simple. This makes me winder if the reverse brake you speak of isnt hung up or something of the sort. Ill have to get my hands on an FSM to see if there is a way to manually or electrically disengage it.
 
Inspect the shifting linkage ask the pervious owner if he pull the panhe did the service and if so what did it look like or drain the pan keep the fluid if it looks good. Pull the filter clean it or replace it if plugged. :snacker:
 
Alright. Well. I contacted John at IPT and he said that he has seen this before and it is absolutely an internal failure. Of what..I'm not sure . So I'll be swapping that transmission. Now I know that from a 4runner I need an 01-02 ( due to the revision and removal of the kickdown cable). But my question is, will an A340f from a 2003 Tacoma work??

The late model A340f in Tacomas have the extra solonoid and fly by wire and no downshift cable like the 01-02 4runner. But have not known anyone who has swapped one from a Tacoma. The census seems to be that 01-02 trannys are only compatible with 01-02 without any modifications. If the plug connectors are the same and the output shafts is compatible then it should fit . I am not sure because like I said I have not known of any one who has done this swap. May be some one else could chime in.

.I Know this is an older post but I am having this same issue with my 96 " 3rd Gen!
Reverse has left the vehicle completely so Has anybody come up with a diagnostic fix to repair and cost to do so?
