Yup, the original hot hatch now looks kind of tepid.

Actually, my Rabbit came out before the Rabbit GTi (ie hot hatch) and was slower. The GTi had more horsepower and was quicker.
My '87 VW GTI 16V has more horsepower
than both the Rabbit or Rabbit GTi along with more weight.

If my truck was available with a V8 i would have bought it in a heartbeat !!!!! As for Toyotas response to the V6 , ya right . 10 more horse power , slow , less fuel economy , noisy , ect..... compared to the 4.7 V8 in the 4th gen.
Not to mention the fuel situation in this country I really doubt there will be a V8 anytime soon. Just my guess .

I sold my '04 Sport V-8 a few years back as I needed a diesel pickup. What a great engine that was except for the pita to change tranny fluid/filter.
It was never about HP. The six had more HP back then but the 8 was a smooth torquey SOB. I recall pulling a 27' trailer from NV to the E coast and back with little trouble.
