Hey guys I bought a used sr5 last month it has 60k on it 4x4. I have never owned or driven another toyota or 4 runner before . This noise sounds like a diesel at idle and it doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warm . I had the infinity dealer check and they said that's a normal noise . any input would be great

The engine sounds a lot like a diesel at idle. You are good to go and there is nothing wrong with the engine. Mine sounds exactly the same. Have fun with your Runner and in the future remember that many issues like this can be solved by using the (crap) search function.

Good god....this better not be another 3 page thread when I wake up. :flamethrwoer2:

Perfectly normal and perfectly ANNOYING! Coming from a 2006 V8, I found the noise in both the 2011 LE I had and in my current 2014 TEP There is absolutely no reason these cars should make this annoying sound all the time.

Love the 2014 but every time I drive the rig the noise pisses me off. I'll probably unload it later next year and try something else for a change.

I like it.

Mechanical noises like that make me kinda horny.

A lot of motors with plastic intake manifolds seem to resonate valve chatter, etc. a lot more than their aluminum counterparts.

My 2011 Limited has the same sound. I noticed this a few months ago. I personally like the diesel sound as it makes me think I got more power than I actually do, but will not test that thought!!! :biggrin1:

Thanks ! For all the information glad to know it's okay . Also the other thing I noticed is that sometimes when I have come to a stop and then release the brake petal it is rough and feels like the transmission clunk . It doesn't happen all the time just sometimes . Anyone else have that ?

My 2014 TEP makes that noise sometimes. I believe it is the slip yoke moving. I usually only get it when I drive to work in the morning. I'm wondering if it is because the engine revs a bit higher when the truck is still warming up so there is more pressure/torque on the drive line when I'm stopped and on my brakes.

Mine sounds like that with 85 octane (I live at 8500 ft).

Sounds fine with 91, which is our premium.

87 is hit and miss.

For that slight thud when releasing the brake pedal or just before or after stopping, try greasing the drive shaft slip joints and u-joints.

I took it in to the dealer , it needs a new drive shaft as part of the Toyota service bulletin for that issue ,waiting for it to get repaired now
