Nokian Rotivas vs Cooper AT3?

Has anyone run both? I've been researching both for a while now and the info regarding the Rotivas is fairly limited due to their "boutique" status in the US.

I believe the following may be advantages that the Rotivas hold over the AT3s but I'd like to get your opinions:
  • available in 265, 275, and 285 70/17.
  • Mountain snowflake (although AT3s get good reviews re snow traction).
  • Better siping???
  • Nokian "know how" re winter tire performance

The "advantages" I've listed are what I would consider advantages for my year round driving in the PNW.

Nokian makes an amazing tire for poor road conditions. While I don't have experience with this tire, I can say the sedan nokians work remarkably well in all 4 seasons. Cooper makes a great tire too, but if the price is at parity with the nokian that's where my money would be...

Have you ran either of the other tires? I've read several reviews where people have moved from the Revo IIs to the AT3s and preferred the AT3s. I realize opinions are like :llama:s but it is still nice to hear them every once in a while.

Have not run the OTHER tire but have at3s on my 05 , all around great tire ! Great on our oil slick wet summer roads here . Very happy with them on our dirt roads (Co. maintained) n Ut & not very well at that ! Great wear & no noise my 2c . Revos on the 2011 but only because I was n a hurry to get BS 20" rockstars off & couldn't get Coopers till 4 days later .

Couldn't tell about the others from personal experience. I have been running the Revo II's(LT) on and off road. I have gone everywhere that folks have and some places where trucks with a more aggressive pattern haven't.

I commute about 90 miles a day on twisty interstates, and in all conditions.....and love their surefootedness. I'm on my third set (265) . The other two sets I ran until about 40k, and sold them on Craigslist for $300.

Didn't mean to cause additional confusion, and I don't think I've remember hearing anything bad about the AT3. I just happen to think the Revos get overlooked.

I've run 2 sets of Revos and now I'm trying the AT3. The Revos definately gave me more confidence in the rain and wet conditions. However I think they are a heavier tire, as my gas mileage was worse.

I'm trying the AT3s based mainly on price and recommendations of other forum members. My tire shop had a hard time balancing them, any savings I made went to labour afterwards.

Not to muddy (snowy?) this too much, but Cooper has a new tire out, that's probably more comparable to the Nokian Rotiivas than the actual AT3...

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company - Discoverer A/TW?

Looks to be a winter rated version of the AT3. It's a new tire though, so I don't know how well their distributed yet, or how it compares in price, etc..
 
I saw the ATW as well but have not seen any info on them. They look the part but the lack of sizes is a definite downside. Hopefully they ramp up production and we get some good reviews shortly.
 
i have rotiivas. while not as "cool" looking as some others they are absolutely unstoppable and you just don't slide on ice. they last decently if you run them all year too, but i'm taking mine off for the summer just to preserve them a bit longer.

Nokian lists the Rotiivas under both summer and winter tires. I suspect they're an all season tire but would almost have to wear quickly in summer if they are good on snow.
 
I've run a ton of different tires out there for all terrains and I will say that the Rotiivas are an amazing tire. They're excellent in dry weather and rain and really shine through some of the worst winter weather. Their tread wear is also excellent. They have indicators etched in the tread block itself and after about 10,000 miles of summer driving, they still had the 100% indicator showing, although barely.


The only down fall to the tire is that they're not carried by a lot of retailers and so finding the size may be difficult and general tire availability. I had a massive nail that went in sideways and sliced part of the sidewall on its way in that needed a replacement. With no retailers around me, I had to wait a few days before my new tire came in.

Also when purchasing my new 4RUNNER, I looked for some tires in the stock size from where I had previously purchased my last set for my Jeep and didn't see it listed. So assuming it wasn't offered I went with some Goodyears. Turns out they were available (still kicking myself), but the lesson is since they are harder to come by, you'll have to search harder for your tire size. The Nokian website lists them, I should have checked.

I will add that I've heard great things about the Goodyear Wrangler AT with Kevlar and just got them on my 4RUNNER and so far they're awesome. Very quiet, smooth, perfectly balanced, and did great on my recent light offroad adventure to GWNP. I haven't tried them out in the winter yet, but from seeing their performance on my boss' Tahoe, they seem incredible.

Thanks for the input. Looking at wet performance Rotiivas are good but not great. However they look so good elsewhere they may be the right ones for me. Will get me home in snow and are adequate on wet and dry pavement. Pretty hard to pull that off. A snow rated tire I can run all year is compelling.

Wrangler Adventure, Falken Wildpeak, BFG Rugged T/A, and maybe Revos all seem to have better wet performance. But they also have other issues the Rotiivas don't (noise, wear, rolling resistance, etc.) Hankook Dynapro and Cooper AT/W have specs more similar to the Rotiivas. I'm considering those as well.

Those Cooper AT/Ws actually look pretty good. If they were available last year when I bought the Rotiivas I would've had a tough time deciding between the two.

Agreed. Cooper AT/3s look good as well, but they have higher rolling resistance. 1-2 more MPG easily pays for the tires.

Correction: AT/3 is not snow rated, so can't really be compared to the Rotiiva.

Edit: slightly

Cooper AT/W is just slightly too large for my LR3 without some modding. The 18" rims I have aren't as bad as the 19s on the wife's Limited, but still not good. Looking more like Nokian is the answer.
