Non nav double din with backup?

Can you run a backup camera to a double din stereo unit that has an lcd display, but doesnt have navigation?

Not sure if it's even possible, but I like the thought of having a backup camera without having to premium cost of a navigation system.

Yes, you absolutely can, as long as the head unit is capable of video playback has an aux video input (most will clearly label it for a backup camera). You just run a single RCA cable from the camera to the back of the head unit, wire up the camera and the head unit - most will have a wire in the harness for this - to a reverse trigger such as the power feed to the reverse lights, and you're in business.

Just about all of the currently available double-din, non-nav LCD head units will work. I just bought an entry level Pioneer (AVH-X3600BHS) from Crutchfield, and a backup camera from Amazon and plan to install it all this weekend. Search the forum - there are many threads on the subject.

My SR5 doesn't have the steering wheel controls, but there is a separate wiring adapter you would need to retain those functions - Crutchfield will recommend what you need based on your vehicle type and trim.

Only a few things that I can tell:

Pre-amp volts on 3700 4 (vs 2 on the 3600)
EQ Bands on 3700 are 13 (vs 8)
native iPhone support is 3G through 6+ on 3700 vs 3G through 5S on 3600

I would have a hard time believing that the 3600 won't support the 6/6+ if it supports the 5c/s. Not an issue for me as I'm an Android guy, but could be something you ask Crutchfield about prior to buying if it is a concern. I'm also not an audiophile so the pre-amp volts and eq bands don't matter to me.

FWIW, it's true you can get better prices elsewhere, but the 3600 @ Crutchfield is the same price as the 3700 on Amazon (which is $100 less than Crutchfield) so really your call if you want the updated version.

I would opt for the newer model. If you don't need the HD radio, get the 2700bs. IF you don't need the ability of tuning then get the 270bt. With the 270bt, you'll have all the features of bluetooth and backup camera add-on. It'll be cheaper cause your not paying for the ability to mildly tune you your system or run a 3 way active speakers (network mode). So in other words, if your not planning to run a good audio system, don't waste the money on the xx700bs series, just get the 270bt. The rca output volts (4v preout) just lets you have a cleaner signal to your amps at high volumes.

I've been looking at all the Pioneer 2 dins on Crutchfield and it's nice to get them broken down like this. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the 3600, but now I'll have to look into the 3700 on Amazon and the 270bt you mention. I just want the best sound I can get with the rest of the stock JBL Synthesis RDS system, BT capability, and USB. HD radio is a nice extra along with sirius and navigation expandability, but the last two I don't really need.

Is Amazon the cheaper route after buying the other necessary components like the adapters and harness? What else would I need to purchase separately that would come packaged if I bought through Crutchfield? Thanks!

If you want the options to expand to xm/sirius and navi, then look at the 2700bs. The 3700bhs is the same as the 2700bs but with HD radio. With the navi I suggest you look into a Garmin or one of the other brands. You can expand with a pioneer unit, but its pricey, $300 for the nav unit. I don't know if you'll hear the difference with sound quality with any aftermarket HU, since your running the stock JBL system. I'm not sure about this since my 4r didn't come with it. If your not sure of all the options between models, just go to Pioneers web site, and just pick the models that you want to compare.

You can look at crutchfield for all the parts your need, then go get it from other places for cheaper. If you want a peace of mind with warranty, I suggest sonicelectronix. They are cheaper than crutchfield and will provide all the necessary hardware for installation, They won't have as good as support as crutchfield, if you need help with installation. But with the forums and youtube, and if your good at stuff like this, you won't need it. I just looked for all the parts I needed and got it from ebay. I don't mind buying things used and not to worried about warranty 90% of the time. Some sellers do offer warranty that sell off of ebay, but just make sure they are a authorized dealer.

I've researched a little bit about turning the volume up 3/4 of the way before removal of the stock HU, but I'm guessing that's only one of many things I'll have to keep in mind.

When I got my AVH-8500BHS I also purchased these which you probably would want to get as well:

There are 2 antenna plugs in the 4runner and only 1 port in the back of the pioneer unit. This allows both to plug into one:

In additon to the above you will need this adapter as one of the plugs is smaller than the other and the Y splitter has 2 of the same size plugs. This adapter will allow you to use both plugs on the splitter:

When I did mine I had never done it before either. Its a lot easier than it sounds. What does turning up the volume before removal do?

Thanks for the heads up on that, dgwood. I honestly don't know the exact purpose behind turning the volume up, but I think it has something to do with the factory amp and being able to use the entire volume range(?) after install. Some people were having issues after their installs with the volume not being loud enough. It was also recommended that the fade and balance were all centered. Again, I'm a complete novice on this stuff so maybe somebody else can chime in.
