noob question: XREAS....and aftermarket shocks/coils...

How does it work? Do I have to completely remove XREAS in order to replace the shocks and the coils?

What exactly is the benefit of getting rid of XREAS (if you have to) and installing aftermarket shocks/coils?

See this post.

You don't have to remove the entire system from the 4Runner. Just remove the shocks, if you're getting coilovers or new shocks and springs. Disconnect the shocks' hydraulic lines as shown in the diagram above, if you plan on returning the 4Runner to stock. There are check valves at the couplings where the lines connect. Do not disconnect the lines at the banjo bolt on the shock, it'll ruin the shocks.

The benefits are you don't have use a spacer lift and can acheive a better ride both on and off road. If you add a bumper, winch or additional recovery gear, you can get heavier springs to support the additional weight.

Well this is awesome news. So basically I can just replace the XREAS Shocks with some aftermarket versions....but they have to be a certain type of aftermarket shock right? Like some kind of gas injected shock or something?

Also, again a noobish question, there are coils or springs...and shocks and then coil-overs....

what's the difference and what is better?

There isn't an aftermarket X-REAS replacement shock. Only the OEM X-REAS shock will give you the diagonal link with the other corner. So with a shock replacement you will lose X-REAS, but others have reported with coilovers it rides better than X-REAS.

Both springs and coilovers will lift your 4Runner.

There are coils like OME which just give you a specific lift height all around. Coil replacement is cheaper than coilovers. Coilovers are for the front only, which are adjustable because the shock body is threaded and there is a collar which the spring sits on that can be adjusted for height. Coilovers will allow you compensate for front-end sag such as adding a winch at a later date. With springs, you would have to replace it with a heavier spring if it sags too much due to weight.

When you replace the shocks, you loose the functionality of XREAS. You can replace just the coils and keep the XREAS shocks though.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't that over extend the X-REAS shocks?

Hey thanks for explaining it all so far.

So coil-overs are for the front end only....and then the back end needs shocks and springs.

So I could do some Belstein coil overs in the front...and do some belstein springs and shocks in the back.

I've only heard of OME and Belstein. Are there other recommended companies out there for our 4runners? Whats the preferred method and company?

I guess over extension could be possible, but I've never heard of it. I've talked to several members who are running FJ Cruiser coils with spacers on their XREAS system without issues. I guess it's like too much topout spacer, it "could" cause overextension but isn't really likely.

Those are the two most popular and they're both good. Toytec has lots of options and they'll give you a discount code for being on this forum. They also have fairly priced, bundled systems. There are other sources that are good too. As far as XREAS replacement shocks are concerned Shockwarehouse.com shows them. The issue, IMHO, is there is no good answer on how to service the hydraulic fluid within the XREAS. So even if you bought new shocks no body has figured out a cheap, easy way to service the XREAS fluid reservoir.

:iagree:100%

So the consensus is that I can put new springs on my XREAS front to account for a heavy new bumper and everything should work OK?

Did this work for you? I am preparing to order the shrockworks bumper and winch combo and I would like to add some springs to take the weight of the heavier bumper off of the XREAS suspension.

I doubt that you can, since the front strut has no coil on it. Only the rear has separate shocks and springs.

There are springs over the shocks on the front end. That's why I wonder if a bit heavier duty spring would take some of the strain of the shrockworks bumper off of the xreas shocks.
