NOOB with a rear brake cylinder question

hey guys...

my lady picked up a 98 limited with 230K, its now got 250K

had some good times in this lil thing...

im new to the yota scene, but after having worked as a valet for the past 5 years, i have been in and out of many, MANY 4runners with every mileage range you can think of (up to 317,000), i can attest to their surviveability and their high quality parts

that being said, im not a mechanic, and not an expert, but i do have some background in brakes..

tell me if my assessment is close...

rear brakes wont release fully,working e-brake handle does not relieve problem. passenger side wheel cylinder appears to be leaking...

im thinkin new wheel cylinder and brake shoes n im good as new..

ive read that the rear axle seal will also look like a leaky wheel cylinder, but with the accompanying brake issues im having, im leaning toward wheel cylinder.

who is the OEM MFG of toyota's brake parts, AISAN?

Go ahead and do a brake overhaul in the rear if you can verify that the leaking fluid is indeed brake fluid. Should be an easy smell test, gear oil smells awful, brake fluid has a subtle smell.

Wheel cylinders can be has pretty cheap, as well as brake shoes. When I overhauled mine I got everything at Napa, and it's great. Sure going Toyota OEM might be better, but costs a bunch more.

Get
-Two wheel cylinders
-Brake Shoes
-Hardware Kit
-Brake fluid

Then you will be all set to have a good set of working brakes

It sounds like the bad wheel cylinders are indeed your issue. IF your pad material gets so low that the wheel cylinder pistons over "extend" then the piston will have a hard time retracting and get stuck

There's a good possibility its the rear axle seals leaking on the brake shoes. The wheel cylinders are pretty sturdy. You can get your parts on rockauto.com. In fact I bought new wheel cylinders for $25 ea and they are Aisin brand when I did my axle seals. Figured I didn't want to have to do that job twice. Ended up doing it 4 times in 2 month2 before I figured out how to get the seals to seal.

Look at my avatar, Its the passengers side rear brake cylinder.

I had squeaking ft brakes when I picked my 4runner up a few weeks ago. I knew the brakes would be the first maintenance I was going to do. The Ft pads where the easiest I have ever done and the rear shoes weren't bad yet, once I took off the rear wheel I saw that something was leaking, trip to Advanced Auto and $17.00 plus brake fluid and an hour later no more squeaking or spongy brake peddle feel.

i know this is a very old thread, but i wanted to finish it up

this ended up being a failed rear axle seal

the fluid leaking was gear oil.

to fix, a new rotor and pads were procured, all brake components were removed and cleaned, axle was removed and seal was pulled

new seal, new bearing, new oil and it went back together, new pads and rotor and it was all back in business. :guitar3:
