After we parted ways, I went to Sourgrass and tried to find the trail Brain suggested I check out... I couldn't find the old bridge, but there was a logging road that looked like it looped back to Borderman crossing(?)... but it just went on and on and on.. so I flipped a U.

Finally made it all the way through! 3rd time was the charm.

Thanks [MENTION=113049]rochmpr[/MENTION] for putting it together and leading the way. Will have to hit Black Springs OHV area and Sourgrass next time.

I had a friend of mine who used to live in Chester which is right near Lake Almanor and he always said there's tons of options. He made it sound like there was just random trails and small lakes all over the place. Sad thing is, he died last month and him and I never went out there for him to show me.... So really it's just a guessing game for me.

That being said, google maps even shows a bunch of unnamed roads around the Chester area. Shitty part is it's like 3 1/2 hrs to get there and it's pretty much a guess... Near there (sort of) is poker flat. Is that one anybody has done? Seems decent enough.

Otherwise, we'd have to be headed a little more west I think

I wonder if all the roads are just to access the lake and are just maintained fire roads.

So that left part of Hells Hall Acre Road... I saw it, but I didn't think that was an actual trail... It just looked like a dirt lot... Damn it. LOL

Also, it was marked off on my map, so I didn't think it lead to anywhere. Should've checked it out... I intended to take the red route back to Boards Crossing Road, but my actual route was something like the blue one since there was a turn off to the right that I thought would go back towards boards crossing... I turned back a few times to try and find a turn off point, but where the turn offs would be would be the edge of a mountain or thick brush.

That turn off to the right just went on and on. I think after 2-3 miles in, I just got creeped out and flipped a U with a quickness... LOL

Sorry about your friend man. It sounds like he gave you all the info you needed though.

Part of the fun of wheeling is the discovery process. Your buddy gave you just enough info to go on. The rest is pointing the rig up the trail. Some keep going, some don't. Neither Google maps or FS topo's can really be trusted. It boils down to how much are you willing to push on in the face of trails that haven't been run in years.

My rigs in the garage waiting do get it's final mod. Once that's done I'd be happy to come up your way. Most of my wheeling has been Bishop centric. I'm about out of trails. Including the ones that don't connect but really do. lol

Barnett Lake is pretty high on my list up by you guys. Anybody run it since it re-opened?

Thanks and you're very right about off-roading. It's funny, before this last weekend trip I had one friend bail because he didn't want me to drive all the way and actually wanted to trailer my very highway friendly truck up there instead. I refused and said a big part of having it built accordingly is being able to get to the trail, drive the trail, and go home afterward. It's all part of the adventure I thought.

What I'm saying is that you're very very true about exploring being the whole part. What's the saying "it's not the destination but the journey". I really believe that now. Took me a little time to understand but that's totally what it's all about

But there is one back road my buddies and I took to get to our camping/start of backpacking trip at the trinity alps... I honestly have no idea which one it was...

Sounds like the infamous driver lean because of the fuel tank. dunno about the 5th gens, but the 4th gens need a 1/4" spacer on the driver side to fix it... I'm to cheap and lazy to do it...

Hmm, full tank yes, but the lean started after the trip.. I have a 1/4" spacer passenger side for the infamous KDSS lean... we'll see. I'm aiming to notch my springs in the back, might remove the spacer if needed.

With the extra lift in the back the rare diff has some more room on the trails, which is good, but it doesn't look great 'mall crawling' atm.

What time did you guys get off the trail?

I think you guys got on the trail right around the time we started airing back up.

We were pretty slow, the trail was busy in the afternoon too. We didn't get off the trail until after 3 lol, we took 4 1/2 hours so I highly doubt you were still around by then!

I was in the area until 4ish, then left back to sac. We had a quick drink at the Lube Room and then I headed towards sourgrass trail and chilled there for an hour or so, then went trail hunting. Which killed lots of time. Haha

I am, but it seems that there are some very technical parts, how much do you use your sliders on that trail?

BTW I'm waiting for RSG to send my sliders and a better kdss plate, might need help with the install.

Sounds fun, but truck is down thru the weekend. Adjusting the read pinion angle and installing a double cardan driveshaft. Trying to minimize the upper link hitting the gas tank on drop-out.

Yeah, I have heard similar things about the northern half of the state ... basically dirt roads and trails all over ... But Lake Almanor area is a bit northernly... exploring that area is a definite overnighter or weekender type trip.

Poker Flat is south of Lake Almanor and is closer. It's also on my (not so) short list to run.
