Just moved to South Bay area and was wondering if anyone could suggest some easy to moderate trails near me. It's my daily driver and only vehicle and since i dont know anyone up here just yet wanted to take it easy till i settle in.

Also if there are any meet ups coming up let me know!

Lived in the South Bay most of my life before coming up to Sac for school. I'll tell ya that most of the good trails used to be public access, but then they slowly became private property/privately owned roads by the city/county. Can't really blame them though. There were quite a few in the Santa Cruz mountains that were awesome, but then they closed... But for good reason... too many people would come through and trash up the roads.

Your best bet is Hollister Hills, Old Coast road(right near Big sur, Bixby Bridge), and Prewitt Ridge. But Hollister gets boring quick. Old Coast road is flat. Prewitt Ridge is quite cool to camp on the ridge, but its relatively flat.

I'd recommend once of these days you come join us on a trail run. Might be a long day for ya, but it'll be worth it IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions! Ill definitely check those out even if they are mostly flat, at least it'll scratch the itch, temporarily.

I'm open to drive and know that the better trails will require it, let me know when you guys do a trail run! I'll join.

Anyone gone to the deer valley trail.? A few guys went up last weekend and said it was very technical but doable with small lift and no lockers. But also said a rubicon rock crawler edition had to winch a sheeet load of times. More than 10 were his exact words.
My cousin is on taco world and he says those guys say armor and locker is needed.
I’m probably going to try this alone with the family, that’s why I’m trying to see if anyone else has tried it.
I YouTubed it and it doesn’t look too bad but I don’t trust that at all.
I’ve done signal peak a bunch of times so I want to try something different but still fairly difficult. Not just fire roads.
If you guys know of any nice spots to hit up camp one night than head back let me know.

Deer Valley is a fantastic trail, difficult, remote, scenic. A big step up in difficulty from Signal peak for sure...

I'm a maybe. I just got back from a 2.5 week wheeling trip in AZ, NV, UT and CO so I need to figure out my rattles, clicks and clunks from that trip before throwing it at another trail. Pretty sure I need to change some fluids as well, specifically the transmission fluid. I'll keep checking back here for updates.

You could probably make it NP, just with all the obstacles and by yourself, that's when things tend to go bad.
Having to wait for some others that are running the trail, hopefully, to give you a pull or tug, what ever the situation might have happened.


Edit.... Snake Lake trail is a little challenging. There's a couple small lake on the run to camp at also.

Throwing this out to see what the interest would be like.

Monday, October 15, 2018, a day run into the Rubicon from Loon Lake. Go into little Sluice or Buck Island and come back out.

My main things are;
1) Week day to minimize traffic & congestion (especially since we'd most likely all be IFS rigs).
2) Having a capable rig / parts / tools for what may be thrown at us on the trail.
3) Keeping the list to 5-6 vehicles max.

Some may think I am coming off like an ass (but I am used to that), the reasoning for the criteria is to make sure everyone had a good time, keep up a good pace and not spending time dealing with issues because someone thought their WRX was a good choice.

Any thoughts?

I would say it would be best to meet at the Loon Lake trail at at 7:30 am to air down and then head out. Yes it makes for an early morning, but hopefully we can get back at a decent hour.

Have you camped at Lola Montez Lake, just east of Signal Peak? Easy forest roads to camp at the lake (except for the final section), but there are some fun 4lo routes in the area. Continue south from Lola Montez, down to the interstate if you want to test your 4runner out. Not a long route or super-technical, but fun enough. Other 4lo routes exist in the area. Try to find your way to Mossy Pond, lol, if you want to see how your RCI skid does on big tree roots and granite steps.

I wouldn’t call signal peak easy, but it’s doable with good tires and a lift. I did use lockers on few up hill rocky parts, touched my sliders once.
