Nor Cal Wheeling, Camping and BS - 2018

As much b*tching as i've done, I've gotten over the fact of how much damage has occurred, and just happy we got out in one piece... well missing a few pieces, but for the most part, one piece. And i'll take whatever shit you want to give me for being that stupid.

Honestly, we got up driveline hill, and came up to the split, Eagle lakes on the left, and Meadow Lake on the right. We took Meadow Lake since we thought it was just another innocent trail, that was just 10 miles long.. Boy were we mistaken.. We got about 6miles+ in, and some jeepers caught up to us. They were shocked that dietsoap got there on 35's, but were even more surprised that I got to where we were on 33's. At that point they explained to us that we were on Fordyce, and thats when it struck us... We didn't think we were on Fordyce up until that point, and I didn't have any issues getting to that point. They informed us that the way forward was closer, and easier than turning back, so we took their word for it. Boy were we mistaken...

We carried forward, and it was easy up until a point, where we were way closer to the exit point, past winch hill one. We figured it'd just be smart to just carry on since we were informed that if we could get to Winch hill 1, and take the by pass, it'll be easy to get to that exit point.

I think the last 3 miles took the longest, because there was constant winching to get up obstacles, and with dietsoap CV blown, we needed to pull him/winch him up every obstacle. Throw in the fact that we did get out and walk practically every section and it being dark, it just made that last 3 miles way longer than it should've. I've damaged/broken quite a few things, but i'm more than happy to foot the bill even if it won't be cheap. At the end of the day, I'll admit, I was freaking out and scared we wouldn't make it out before the sun fell. But looking back, that experience was something to reflect upon, and was one hell of a fun trail. Although I won't be going back, any time soon as I have nightmares of that place, I'll probably stumble across that split and reflect back at that bittersweet experience.

And hey, on the bright side... At least I know the limits of the rig are way past my personal limits. Also, thank god for public transportation! :lmao:

This past weekend I hit Deer Valley Trail. I was told just the entry (gate keeper) was the hardest part. I felt like it didn’t get that much easier. We started the run at 11 am and didn’t finish till 9. Maybe having 10 rigs might have played a role in getting out late. Well three rigs turned around about a mile in because sun was going down. I decide to proceed forward because again I was told it gets easier.
Lesson learned. I know I’m not doing that run again. At least I represented. I was the only Toyota on 33’s and the rest were Jeeps. They were pretty impressed I was able to keep up with them.
I’m glad you guys made it out safe.

Well shit, lets pencil it in then. I vote for a super early departure since our daylight is very limited this time of year. I could leave the inlaws by 6 or 7 am and we could meet up and then be near the trailhead by what, like 9 or earlier? That would be a damn good start time. I feel confident we could tackle Strawberry. My buddy at work (solid axle 2nd gen) says "that's the trail I take my IFS buddies" meaning it should be able to be handled with relative ease haha.

Trail info? Possible meet up point? Coordinates? I am brand new to California, I am not familiar with any of these names.

I still have to confirm whether or not I'm going to LA to see the in-laws that weekend, but if not I'm there. We are talking about 11/24 right? or this Saturday 11/17?

Kudos guys, I keep trying to get the Taco guys to do that "RIGHT TURN CLYDE".
Nobody ever wants to .
That was the 2nd trail I did when on 32s, I was with a few built Asian rigs. We camped after the first crossing as it was dark. Returned the same way in the morning.
For some reason, they said I made it through better than a few other guys there.
Yes I was the underdog. But full armor underneath.

Sorry you 2 didn't fair so great. Dont let this discourage you on adventuring again, just a lesson learned.

Yea... uh I had no armor other than factory. I need to get on that....

It definitely left a memorable experience but will not stop me from hitting trails. Hell, I'm trying to get my shit fixed so I can go wheeling with these guys next saturday.

It wont' stop me but has surely slowed me down quite a bit. After hearing everyone that passes saying Fordyce makes the Rubicon not so difficult has me a bit curious now. I'm assessing the damage to my vehicle and I'm hoping that my front LCAs are not messed up otherwise I'll have to convince the wifey to let my buy the LT kit. I was suppose to spend that money on getting geared and lockers for the snow season but time will tell yeah.

From everyone has said about how surprised they were made it as far as we did with no lockers on our tires, I'm starting to feel better now that the dust is settling from that event. I will be back though, once I'm 37s and locked just for revenge.

Yeah sat 11/24, next Saturday.

Seems like a moderate trail. Couple tricky parts but I prefer the slow and steady method and avoid damage at al costs. How equipped is your truck?

And we haven't decided a meeting point. Folsom4Rnr and I will be in the Folsom/el dorado area so if you wanted to head that way and meet us I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue. So far I think it's just me and him. About 1/2 hour passed Sacramento on 50 east. From there another hour to the trail up 50 east (if we choose the north entrance I guess).

I would like an early start so depending on your drive you would be heading out early.

Early start is not a problem, I definitely wouldn't mind meeting up with you guys and convoying out there. I'll check out that link. I hope I don't have to see my mother in law!!!!

My runner is equipped well enough for the trails I've run but we don't have the crazy shit back east that you guys have here.

I'm running a 3 inch bilstein 6112/5160 lift with no front sway bar. I still have the rear sway bar but I have extended end links to get more flex out of it. I've got rock sliders (wish I got the ones with kickers but hindsight is 20/20.) they still have saved my butt before, and an RCI skid plate. I'm also running 32 in BFG KM2s. In case there is any deep water out there I do have extended breathers installed.

** I've also got some recovery gear: hi-lift jack, shackles, straps, shovel, traction boards, extra set of underwear.

***Just checked the website you sent. What is with the water mark that says closed pending litigation?

Your good, a few of us did it earlier this year after they just opened it.

You won't have issues, only 2 tricky parts. You don't have to go over the boulders, you can go on the side with one wheel on the rock and do some slider action.

Folsom4Rnr & 4Reak Show You can count me in for 11/24 early morning meet up.

But my sliders are painted so nicely! Jk yeah I'm not too worried. 2nd gens are way more narrow so I've been able to sneak on some easier lines. Brian (@folsom4rnr) suggested a meetup place and time. He's gonna post it up soon he says. He also is planning south to north, so a little more time to get there via 88 but it makes for a shorter return trip back on 50 which I'm totally cool with.

We should be good. Got quite a few well equipped trucks and plenty of equipment. At least 2 high lifts, 2 sets of traction mats, a million feet of tow straps, a come along, and who knows what else. I was gonna cut up some extra pressure treated 4x4 I had into 12" lengths and use those for stacking if we need it. Seems like a better option than using just random rocks. We can test that theory if/when needed.

That reminds me I have a 2' length of a 4x4 I keep in the trunk for that purpose.

As long as you're wheeling with Folsom4Rnr, you're in safe hands. :playball:

LOL ... thanks!

I like to be prepared :D

Just let Folsom4Rnr use his fancy traction mats. He always wants to use those suckers in one way or another, even if he's not stuck.

:lmao:

Actually... they are bridging ladders...not traction mats :nerd:

I still need to find a place to actually use them and get that picture the sales woman asked for! I didnt get any good pictures from that failed corral hollow run last spring

That dad mentality. :lmao:

Dang, dietsoap and I could've put them to the test at fordyce. hahaha

I think we have video somewhere of us using them....
