Normal/Abnormal brake behaviour?

Noticed this a few times already, scared the crap out of me every time.

Semi-sudden braking with plenty of space, ABS kicks in, and kills my braking power. Takes forever to get the car to a stop. I am in 2H.

Highway is barely wet i believe in the 3 times i've had this happen. Does not seem to happen in 4H.

Is this normal the way it drives? Or do i need the brakes checked up on?

In normal braking, i also need to maintain what i believe is more then usual pressure on my braking foot to keep the car from rolling as well.

Thanks for any tips. I have a full ebc/yellow stuff kit i am putting in soon. But wanted to hear opinions of if my system is working properly first.

Its your tires. Your are breaking the coefficient of friction. Your vehicle is acting as it was designed. ABS does not lessen braking distance but instead makes the vehicle maneuverable during a loss of traction/panic braking situation. Id bet 10000000 dollars if your abs was inop you would be locking your tires up.
In my experience ( 2016 Trd Pro ) the nitto terra grapplers are nice quiet tires that perform pretty well off road but in the rain or wet roads at highways speeds they are pretty damn sketchy.
If youd like to prove my point quit braking as hard and allow even more stopping distance and Ill bet the " problem " never occurs again.

The pedal is mushy. Drive it like a tour bus and results will be ok. IT punishes spirited driving. Also check out your tire pressures. You may benefit from a 2-3psi bump, depending upon how low you are at now.

I agree. Two things are most important:
1. Tires
2. Person pushing the pedal

I ran a set of those Nittos and they are not good in wet traction. Taking off from a stoplight on wet pavement? Traction control will kick in more often than not. Many other tires are better.

Tires ultimately decide how fast you stop. You can go buy yellow stuff or big brakes or anything else, but bottom line is how well do the tires grip the surface under braking. Now, the big brake kits and different pads could help on brake fade but not stopping distance nor modulation. I personally have around 130K behind the wheel of a 5th gen and I have never had brake fade, even pulling 5K trailers but that's me.

OP try a short experiment: Go out on a hot dry day and come to a quick full stop from 45 mph. Now go out on a wet cold day at the same place and do the same. Let us know your results. I will bet 100 internet points that your ABS won't kick in much at all on the hot dry day and will be going crazy on the cold wet day. The G2's are a good tire but not the best with wet traction.

Thanks.i figured it was tires. I am slowing planning my upgrade route. I have a full ebc yellow stuff/gd rotor kit. Thinking of Cooper skinnies in 255/80. Just need to figure how to get a spare trd wheel hah.

I've only have one other vehicle with off road tires. Full stock ram 1500 rebel. Never had rain issues. Didn't think oem supplied tires can be so scary..

I was going at maybe 30mph when I had the abs kick in when braking. Scary stuff. Psi is at the recommended level on jamb.

the factory brakes are great in the 4runner, they are more than capable for the vehicle and have a good balance of pad and rotor wear. stick with stock.

I disagree, I've Nitto Terra graplers on my 2013 and never any such issues. In fact those tires saved me more than once during critical hard braking. Both times in dry weather but perfect traction and little ABS trouble (just usual pulsation). I keep my pressures at 31 PSI instead of 32 due to upsize (285/70/17). If I was you I'd have a dealer check those ABS sensors.
