#1: the instructions directed me to reuse the hardware for the attachment at the front of the skid. With the added thickness of the skid, and the thickness of the filler plate the original hardware was not long enough.

#2 and more significant: the intermediate aluminum brace beam has a slot that is supposed to open to the front of the car. That way you can reach up thru the oil filter access port and torque the nut onto the smooth carriage bolt that passes thru the center of the skid and secures there. My brace was bent incorrectly and the slot open to the rear. There was no way to tighten the nut as you could not reach it from that position.


I contacted Josh @ RCI and explained the problem to him. He offered to send two new bolts -which I dont need now because I already stopped working and had to go find some. Unfortunately he offered no solution to the brace issue only saying maybe there was a mix-up. Which doesnt really help me at all.

Could it be possible that you are just mounting the piece the wrong way? Have you tried turning it 180 degrees?

Oh, that sucks...I'm sure it's just a big mis-communication maybe if you emailed him with pictures of what's wrong he would be able to help you resolve the problem. It doesn't make sense for him to leave you high and dry over this tiny part, when I've read nothing but good about the guy :)
 
Heard back from Josh at RCI. He is making it right by me.


removed, sanded, primered, and put about 4 coats of paint and three coats of clear on my front Toyota emblem à la [MENTION=106306]TEQ.FZJ[/MENTION]

I need to get a rear and do the same. I like how it turned out and was glad to get rid of some chrome. Used rust-oleum universal advanced metallic 'carbon mist'

Sorry for the thread jack OP, but I think I finally cracked the code on this, lol. So it looks like that brace only comes on the KDSS front skid plates, which explains why you don't have it and OP does. It was bothering me not knowing, even though I don't own RCI skids :tape:

ah thats odd. I was wondering myself. I know RCI changed design I was thinking maybe it was a part of that. nice to know. I wonder if it supports some part of the KDSS system or something?

I knew there were differences in KDSS vs. non-KDSS (you can't order without identifying what you've got) didn't know what you meant by the original description of the issue since fitment with these is either right on or not at all...it's a skid plate - not much to accommodate for except the differences of KDSS - I just didn't know it included a brace as I've never seen the underside outside of my own skids - -which don't have this brace and don't need it. Anyone know if Budbuilt or SW uses something similar?
 
I am actually not sure what it is for, but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with supporting any KDSS parts. I mean...I ran w/o a front skid for a bit and nothing fell off? jk jk jk. I don't think there's anything to support because nothing on the stock skid supports any part of the KDSS either.

The closest thing I can think of this mimicing is...on the stock skid, there is an extended metal support structure right above the jack point that sits between the skid and the frame cross member directly above it (to keep the thin OEM skid from collapsing when jacking up at the jack point).

On the KDSS version of the RCI skid, the flat section has to extend forward much longer to clear the piston, so maybe RCI felt like due to that extra length it would need some kind of support to keep it from bowing in under stress?

If you compare a KDSS skid plate and a non-KDSS skid plate you will immediately see what I mean. On the KDSS skid plate the oil filter door is completely on the bottom and flat. On the non-KDSS plate, it is half on the flat part, half on the angled part. Hope that makes sense :)

Yeah I was surprised to see that one had it and the other didn't, I only deduced this because I looked at some pictures other members posted, cuz I'm curious like that, lol.

No idea about the shrockworks skids, but my BB one has something similar...it's this piece of square tubing welded on around that general spot.

Interesting - is it removable? What happens when you remove KDSS like many others when converting to full trail status? Gotta buy another front skid?

Not removable on the BB skid unless you grind off the welds, lol. I don't think it matters if you remove KDSS because the support is going to the frame and not the KDSS junk. Besides, I don't believe the front skids are interchangeable between a KDSS and a non-KDSS because the frames are slightly different (front cross member of the frame is slightly lower on the KDSS).

Your truck is looking nice. Can't wait to see it with your new skids. Them tires look great, too. I think that will be my next tire. Does that tire have the 65K or 50K warranty?

Also, I checked out your flicker ( I think it was flicker) some amazing photos you've got there. Love the Tree of Life one.

The "P" sizes of these have 65k warranty
The "LT" and xtreme have 50k

Drove about 50 miles since I got them - so far so good. No noticeable noise, the feel is much better than the Duratracs that were on it originally, and they dont constantly pick up and throw rocks like my Blizzaks

Possibly Flickr but I have an account on all the photog sites just about.
