Not a happy discovery...

So today I finally got around to hard wiring my radar detector power to the cigarette outlet located in the glove box. Though as I am taking piece by piece apart, I suddenly noticed a brown looking bolt. Sure enough to my discovery it was indeed a rusted bolt/screw.

Not a big deal... yet? This tells me moisture is getting in there somehow. I understand fully the process of condensation and believe that this could be the cause for rust. The filter I use is the factory standard filter. No aftermarket fragrance filters etc... I have changed the filter twice since purchase of the truck a little under two years now.

The question is, is this normal? I don't think so and I am a little concerned as to further damages that might be caused down the line.

Do you leave the airflow on all the time, or do you turn all the air off? My wife turned the air off (no airflow what so ever) on her vehicle and it created mold in no time. "modern" AC systems in cars apparently don't like it when you turn them off and that results in moisture in the system at a rapid pace.

That was a long story to try to get to a possible root cause of your rust issue

:iagree: I'm pretty sure it run's the whole time regardless? Even if you turn it off, it still run's so to speak. The Mold is another concern to me... Dealer going down at this rate!

The rust on shaft is normal. The blower draws outside air in and if there is moisture in the air, it will condense in the area. I wouldn't worry about it.

do you blast the a/c in the humid summer months with the windows down? that would probably do it.. think about the moisture you get around the vents on the dash.. its probably the same at the blower

If its any consolation every squirrel cage I have ever taken apart from Jeeps to Hondas have had the shaft and retainer rusted. Stainless is about the only solution. Above post is correct on moisture draw from outside. Old fans were made of stamped steel and the whole thing used to rust. No help I know just fact.

The fact it's coming from you makes it a great consolation! I haven't been back behind there in over a year now.... Guess what.... The curious mind is telling me it's time to go back and look again! I am glad to report that I haven't had an issue with the AC in the meantime.
