Not sure what I need, I assume its a wireharness

Hey guys,

Im in a jam and could use a bit of help. I was going to post this in audio/electronics but I figured I MIGHT have a better shot here since this is specific to a 4th gen.

So my dad bought a 2004 4runner Limited fresh off the line back in 03-04. He got it with the 10 speaker (10 or 8? positive its 10). The stock head unit was the 86120-35201, 6 CD Changer w/ Cassette player.

When he first got it he didnt know he didnt take out the navigation option or something like that and had the dealer install a Pioneer Avic N1 unit. Years later the pioneer craps out and I install a Kenwood. What I first noticed was the dealer destroyed the OEM factory harness, cutting wires all the way to the plug electric tape every where and so on. We wanted to put the original factory unit back in since we are having trouble with the new kenwood and ill probably end up keeping it for my car.

What I need to know is WHERE i can find the orignal wireharness for the factory radio, and im almost sure its a wire harness, unless theres a different name for it or Toyota calls it something else.

Im not sure WHERE I could locate a part number for that harness to get a new one. I checked the cables and didnt see a tag or number written down anywhere.

I could really some help on this, ive been searching but im having trouble finding a part number to make my searches easier. Im I right in thinking I should be able to find this harness from toyota or even a 3rd party?

In anycase ill keep searching, ill try amazon/ebay now and see what i can dig up..

I think what you really need is a wiring diagram because I don't think that you will be able to buy just a piece of the wiring harness. This thing is completely integrated into the main harness; steering wheel controls, amp out back etc, etc.

I think that this may be one of those times when help from an audio install expert could really pay off unless you are pretty comfortable with this sort of stuff.

But as I said, I really think that you need to be looking for the wiring diagram so you can recreate the original harness.

Thanks for the heads up and putting things in perspective. I completely forgot that!! Everything branches out into amp, speakers, controls etc...

And yes what I needed was both ends of the harness both ends were completely butchered by the dealer. The end that goes to the head unit and the end that goes into the amp in the back next to the sub were both runied. Your right I might have a electronics/car audio expert take a look at it. Im not to shabby with reading wiring diagrams and doing that sort of job. It would just have saved me a buttload of time seeing what has been done and what not.

For anyone thats interested,
Metra 71-8113 is ALMOST what I needed, but with a different pin out. I believe that part is for toyotas WITHOUT the jbl package.

According to some websites what i was looking for was a reverse wiring harness.

So this is what i needed but with a pinout for a JBL system (Metra 71-81163) I wanted to try and open up that harness and move some wires around so they would match up with headunit but I couldnt figure out how to open it. Its likely that metra permanently crimped the connector, like a RJ45 or RG6 connector.

Beacause this is what the dealer left me with after I had them install a pioneer system back in 2004:

The second pic is what the amp wires looked like. It looks exactly the same behind the headunit.

Basically what I needed was a "Reverse Wiring Harness" for the head unit AND factory JBL amp in the back which would enable me to correct a botched install or a poor install. It was probably my fault for not making it more clear in my earlier posts.

What I ended up doing was working with wihat I had, and re-joining all the wires, or what was left of the wires. It was very tedious but in the end it worked out.

I was able to rejoin all the wires sucessfully. The left side speakers (rear and front) sound a bit low. I also feel like I may have mixed up some speaker wires, since they were the EXACT same color with the SAME markings on them. That aside all 9 speakers and sub work along with factory steering wheel controls.

Bottom line, my issue was resolved after a few hours hard work and a few beers. :beer: :beer:

Every little wire was rejoined, what i plan on doing is opening everything up again and redoing the connections with solder and heatshrink, neither of which I had at the moment. Right now eveything is held together with wrapped wires and electric tape.
