November 2015 Meet and Trail Run

Well I booked a cabin in Green Valley, so I'll be up there regardless of weather. Looking forward to it, I'm betting most of that melts this weekend when the weather kicks back up a notch. Driving up Friday evening and staying through Sunday.

I booked my cabin as well... Let's meet up and have a few beers or something. I'm right by Big Bear Airport.

So I'm all set... will be there Friday night and we'll see you guys on the 14th in the morning...

Was thinking the same thing depending on when I get up there. Cabin I got is a few streets off from Green Valley Lake. Taking off from work at 1, have to pick up the kid from school at 235, then headed up hopefully by 3. Traffic is going to suck but it won't be as bad as if I got off at 5 like usual.

Aaahhh I won't be as lucky. My oldest gets out at 3:4pm won't leave till like 5pm. I don't know if wifey is cool with the kids getting out early that day... maybe...

I'd take the whole day off if I had the time and pull him from school, but the rest of my vacation time for the year is booked already.

Fortunately I don't have a wife to tell me what I can or can't do with him.

I have done this trail once before. I have cut off mud flaps on my stock rear bumper with a 3 inch suspension lift and a one inch body lift. In this youtube video where they are coming down the hill about min 5:35 is where I dented my rear bumper and crunched my mud flab when I rolled over a huge loose rock on the steep downhill. It is a great run but it doesn't hurt to have some armor. I did hit my skids a few times as well just saying.

Dave

I think I'm going to sit this one out... I'll wait until you guys do a slightly more noob-friendly drive.

Specially since i'm on shitty all weather tires.

So from what I understand. The run is split in 2 ... first half is the easy run and second half is when you need to be lift and maybe some lockers...

We're splitting off ... I'm going to keep going all the way around.

How long does the first half last? Could one easily turn around (without causing any traffic shit show?) if needed?

Just trying to make sure I don't go in over my head my first time out. Specially since my car is basically stock.

Question would be best answered by @GVL

To be clear, stock rides will have their own route that bypasses the difficult portion. There will still be plenty of scenery and opportunities to explore during/after. Don't miss this!

There were bypasses mentioned for the very difficult parts on White Mountain in a video I watched.

I wouldn't even call 3N16 a stock route. You could do most of it in a suburu. It is the fire road that connects people to the actual trails.

I know I mentioned this before but you can definitely do white mountain in a STOCK 4x4 as long as you don't have low hanging running boards or nurf bars etc hanging down. The link below has pictures of a red 4Runner, completely stock, driven by my coworkers 17 y/o son. He made it though with no damage at all. I'm pretty sure we went from the east to the west which involved going downhill on the toughest sections. If you go the other direction a locker or traction control could probably come in handy.

What I remember of white mountain, and keep me honest here GVL, is that there are NOT bypasses on the difficult parts of White Mountain. You can bypass the TRAIL White Mountain but it is a blue trail at the difficult parts and single road to the top. Again, it isn't bad at all. Go slow, get out of your truck, move some small rocks (yay lifting!) And it is a breeze. I'll try to find the pics.

Pictures from White Mountain (Blue). No pictures of major big obstacles rocks because there were NOT ANY. If it's dry no big deal. Of course ice and snow can change things a lot. I'd definitely pack chains.

There was one part that was a bit sketchy but common sense will go a long way to keep you safe. The most dangerous part (which I remember) is a downhill slanted portion of the road that has loose gravel and then a steep hill (not quite a cliff) on the lower slanted part of the slanted road. The upper part, keep in mind this portion of the trail is several vehicles wide, is solid granite. What do you do? Take the higher altitude side of the road, on the granite, not the loose gravel by the near cliff. Common sense will go a long way here. Easily avoidable.

White Mtn. can be done in a stock rig. However, IF u are HEADING EAST of 3N11, there are really just two tough hill climbs. It's loose, rocky material that, while NOT necessary, would benefit greatly from a traction-adding device. But what do I know... Ask Keemonrunnin :smokin:

T4R run 11/1/14 3N17(EASTbound) @ 3N11

I believe we went down the section with loose rocks, not up so I guess we ran it the other direction.

Yes. We ran it East to West. I organized that run. When was that? We met up at Big Pine Flats.

Weren't you with us that day? It was like two years ago lol. My memory banks are week today. I need to get some coffee.

I remember we ran it east to west but it was a long time ago. It was a very clear sunny day. We had my black 4Runner, a red stock 3rd gen, my friends lifted black jeep and my buddies red 88 Toyota.

Hey guys, sorry I've been super busy prepping the the house for a new roommate. I hate to say we are splitting this into two groups, we are doing the vast majority of the ride together, as mentioned we will come to a point (3N11) where a few trucks can take a bypass on the last section of White Mtn and take a scenic detour and meet back up with the rest of the trucks just mile or two away for a different (easy, but really cool route) back to GV.

Don't worry about not being able to get past a certain section, we will leave no man behind and with all the winching and recovery gear between us it won't be any problem and most likely not even needed.

NOTE: I will have a hard-copy map for everyone at the meeting spot with our route and detour highlighted.

NOTE 2: if anyone makes it up on time Friday and wants to do the GVL scenic loop (30 min) let me know and we'll meet up for a sunset cruise.

Looking forward to a fun run!

Tim.
