NPA: Bilstein 47-258624 - 6112 Coilovers for 96-02 Toyota 4Runner

Arrival Pictures

Received these this afternoon!!

I'm sort of disappointed in the packaging. A little more care could have been taken on MRT's part to secure the contents. No tape on the package at all. FEDEX didn't want to leave it on my doorstep in fear that someone would open it up and take off with the contents so they left it at my leasing office. Everything is there just a little bit of tape would have made all the difference between me having it left on my doorstep or having to skip out of work early to go pick it up from my leasing office.

Another nice touch would've been to put the Bilstein branded box inside another unlabeled box so that passers by wouldn't see the Bilstein brand all over the box and know the contents. Wouldn't be very hard to snap a pic of the part number on the side and know exactly what you have there. Again, just a side note.

Same experience here.
I'm pretty sure he ships direct from Bilstein though.

I guess I wasn't too worried since insurance claims from missing packages have always been immediate for me. No issues minus the inconvenience. If you can find somewhere affordable to assemble them for you, I would do it. Make sure they orient the top hat with the correct alignment though.

well, after reading through this thread i'm debating on whether or not the toytec 3" kit is the budget way to go. amazon has 5100 shocks 6112 shocks and springs for about $850, and it seems they ride much better. just worried about the total height of the lift.

Finally got some time to install new 6112 coilovers on my 2000 4WD 5-speed. I had been riding around on the original stock everything (180K miles) so I installed new OEM ITR, OTR, LBJ, Energy Suspension poly steering rack and end link bushings. I matched this in the rear with new 5100 shocks, OME 906 coils, and new Energy Suspension poly end link bushings. I set the 6112's at the #7/#6 height for 1.64" of lift and actually got closer to 1.75" in the front and a full 2" with the 906's in the rear. We'll see if it settles at all. I also removed the running boards so the truck has a whole new stance/look. I just got back from the alignment shop and already I'm very impressed with the ride, feeling firm and planted but soaking up bumps at speed. I'm looking forward to getting onto some trails very soon before the big Baja trip in January. Thanks a bunch to Chas of MRT for getting these out to me as soon as they hit the shelves.

How are you liking this ride? I was considering this exact combo for my new to me Limited. Anything you would do different? I have 99 talls so I'm only looking for 1 more inch front & back & maybe a 32" tire. Thanks

Got them installed!!!

Finally got the time to install my set of 6112's. Went in pretty easily.

My spread of parts. Bilstein 6112 kit from MRT and KYB strut mounts.

KYB strut mounts (if anyone is curious the KYB mounts do come with new nuts. All the images I saw of them do not show the nuts being included.)

Current 5100's Installed

A look at the 5100's I'm replacing. These are the RCD 5100's for the 4runner.

IMG_0186.jpg

5100 on the passenger side removed.

IMG_0187.jpg

I'm doing this without a spring compressor. I removed the lower balljoint nut and separated it from the lower control arm.

This is passenger's side so it gets clip position 8.

Marked and loosened the lower control arm adjusting cam bolts and swung the arm down and out of the way.

IMG_0197.jpg

Placed the shock assembly in place and slid the lower bolt in to hold it in place.

IMG_0198.jpg

Aligned the bushing and the shock rod

IMG_0201.jpg

Getting everything aligned and ready to use floor jack to compress spring.

IMG_0199.jpg

Use floor jack to apply pressure to lower control arm raising the shock rod through the strut mount.

IMG_0200.jpg

Shock rod will raise through the strut mount and you can capture it with the bushing, washer and nut.

IMG_0202.jpg

Affix the bushing, washer and nut and torque.

IMG_0204.jpg

Balljoint reassembled, swaybar reconnected. Passenger side is done.

Driver's side gets clip position 9.

IMG_0207.jpg

Assembled and installed. Rinsed and repeated from passenger's side.

After:

IMG_0216.jpg

I've got a set of 5100's for sale if anyone is interested...

IMG_0210.jpg

Measurements before were:

Hub2Fender/Ground2Fender

LF: 21.125" / 34.875"
RF: 21.25" / 35.00"
LR: 22.5" / 36.75"
RR: 23.0" / 37.25"

Measurements after are:

Hub2Fender/Ground2Fender/Lift

LF: 22.75" / 36.50" / +1.625"
RF: 22.75" / 36.50" / +1.5"
LR: 22.5" / 36.75" / Same
RR: 23.0" / 37.25" / Same

I still sit a little low on the driver's side rear. I'm planning at least one trim spacer on the driver's side rear. Maybe two on the driver's side and one on the passenger's side. I don't like the fact that I only have 1/4" of rake on the passenger's side and negative rake on the driver's side. I also have not done an alignment yet. I will remeasure after that is done and reassess what needs to be done.

Hope someone gets some useful information about the 6112's from these posts.

Install looks good NVMYT4R .

I figured I'd link to my install of the 1st Gen Tundra 6112's in this thread. I'm still happy with them with the extra weight. My trucks weight is right around 5000lbs and they've settled right around 2.75" of lift on the 3rd and 4th perches.

Thanks so much for posting up about this! Literally the first to comment in here about armor/extra weight that I know of. Let us know what you think after it has settled and you have some miles on it!

NVMYT4R How do the 6112s compare to your old 5100s in the front?

Pretty early to make a good assessment of the ride quality. My initial impressions are that it is stiffer than the 5100 setup I had on there. Now, that's more than likely due to the change in spring rates. The fact that I had stock 235k springs up front on the 5100's top setting. It had a nice cushy ride up front. 6112's are definitely firm but they are not jarring. I will know more after I have put a few more mile on them.

Yeah. So either the shocks have smoothed out a bit or I've gotten used to them but it rides really well. I have no complaints. Got the alignment done and that dramatically changed how the truck drives. So yeah... I'm a happy customer.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply. Did you end up raising the rear? Did the front height settle any?

Ok yeah so I have some trim packers for the back. Haven't put them in yet. Might get to do that this weekend. I bought three spacers. Was planning on two for the driver's side and one on the passenger's side. Just measured and I think I'll just put one on the driver's side. Here are my numbers before, after, and after again.

Hub2Fender/Ground2Fender

LF: 21.125" / 34.875"
RF: 21.25" / 35.00"
LR: 22.5" / 36.75"
RR: 23.0" / 37.25"

Measurements after are:

Hub2Fender/Ground2Fender/Lift

LF: 22.75" / 36.50" / +1.625"
RF: 22.75" / 36.50" / +1.5"
LR: 22.5" / 36.75" / Same
RR: 23.0" / 37.25" / Same

LF: 22.50" / 36.50" / -0.25"
RF: 22.50" / 36.50" / -0.25"
LR: 22.75" / 37.00" / +0.25"
RR: 23.25" / 37.50" / +0.25"

I do believe I lost .25" up front on both sides unless I measured wrong the first time or because I have no weight in the back right now. But I have the same ground to fender measurement. Since my last measurement though I did get an alignment which could have changed my height measurements and I had the wheels/tires balanced and rotated. So there might be 1/8th" more meat on the tires up front now covering the .25" drop in suspension height. I also have just about a 1/4 tank of gas which could also contribute to a transfer of weight from rear/front.

Either way I'm happy. Haven't lost much. Will install the one trim spacer on the driver's side rear and see how well that helps. I really don't want to double up on the spacers so I hope that makes it what I want it to be. If it's within an 1/8th of the passenger's side I'll be really happy.

This is on the tallest setting? You are only getting 1.625 and 1.5 inches of lift?

Yeah.... Because I started already 1.25" lifted with 5100's on their top setting. If you are starting from an average stock 20" hub to fender measurement you are going to see 2.25" of lift on the top setting. Pretty much exactly what they advertise.
