So I took a look at a 1990 4runner yesterday. 3.0 v6, automatic four speed. 200,000 miles. Beautiful under the hood, and no rust on the frame.
The only aesthetic issues I noticed were that the front bumper had a dent in it, it is missing the fender flare on the driver side, the paint on the hood had a bit of oxidization, and the top layer of glass on the sun roof is cracked (doesn't leak though).
So, naturally I took her for a test drive. The first thing I noticed was that the the gas pedal response to get it moving was a lot more than I'm used to on my 2002. I thought it was a "old throttle cable" issue, but I had to get the engine up to nearly 1500rpm to get it to even start rolling.
Once moving I didn't notice issues with the driving, it seemed to accelerate fine, the brakes were a little spongy, but that could easily be a fluid issue, and it still stopped in a safe enough distance that I felt comfortable.
But then I noticed that the "O/D light off" was blinking. I hit the O/D button, and it stayed on solid, hit it again and it kept blinking.
I checked out the yota forum, and there was a thread about how some guy was having the same issues, and all it ended up being was a solenoid.

I don't have a code checker, and I didn't think to ask if the dealer I was buying it from had one.
So, here's the point to my post here.
1) Does it sound like it would be a solenoid issue?
2) If it is a solenoid issue, will I need to drop the transmission to swap parts?
3) Does it sound like the vehicle is worth 1350 (1850 after tax and tags).
Thank you!
