If I put an "O2 sensor" instead of an "A/F mixture sensor" on a 2000 Limited with California emissions, would it still cause it to throw the P0171 code? I had a couple shops scan mine and they all said it was the O2 sensor. Replaced it, no help. Talked to a dealer, said most independent shops don't know that the CA models actually need an A/F, not an O2. Any truth to this, or is the dealer trying to get my money?

I don't even think that an 02 sensor would plug into the A/F harness plug. And yes, a 2000 cali emissions (2 cats) would most likley have an A/F sensor. They are two completley different and non-compatible sensors that cannot be interchanged. Just contact the dealers parts department, give them your VIN and confirm that you indeed need an A/F sensor.
Well, the part I put on mated up to the wiring harness, and what I ordered was called an 02 sensor for Cali model, so should I assume that it is the right part since it fit the harness? Sorry to keep at this, but I hate to throw a couple hundred bucks at this unless it seems like the right part.

I hear ya. There are a few other potential causes for a p0171 (bank one too lean) code. I can be caused by a dirty MAF sensor (most common), or a vacuum leak letting air in after your MAF sensor. Take a look at this thread:

Thanks for the replies guys. I have tried cleaning the MAF sensor, but the dang screws holding it in stripped out. I took the entire breather tube off and used a liberal amount of MAF cleaner. I got it to look much better visually, but I still intend to get the sensor itself out and clean it more thoroughly before I go blowing more $$$. Other things I have tried include changing ECT sensor, airfilter, TPS, and cleaning the throttle body. It runs a heck of a lot better but it still has the code and still cuts out at about 3/4 throttle and beyond. As for what part I actually put on this thing, I have no idea...??? Like I said, it was listed as an O2 sensor and not an A/F, but it's listed as California emissions on the decal under the hood, but not the sticker on the door (That one says federal). The car has a clean carfax, but I guess someone could have put a new hood on it themselves. But anyway, when I get an answer, I'll post it up. And thanks again for all the replies.

UPDATE - SOLVED!!!
So I finally just bit the bullet and took it in to the dealer. Told me the MAF sensor was shot. I had already tried cleaning it, and while I could not get at it all that well cause the screws stripped out and I was too lazy to get them out, I have to wonder if it truly was shot since my honest attempt at cleaning didn't improve a thing. So, I had them replace it. Maybe I got screwed a little, but the freaking thing is running properly now, so I'm OK with it. The cost including diagnostic hookup, parts, and labor was right at $230, so I don't think they gouged me too bad either. Anyway, thought you'd all like to know what the final diagnosis was.
