Observations after removing the hydrocarbon filter

I am guessing this would void your emissions warranty if the dealership bothered to check. Not that I am one to judge. I put a CAI on my 04 @ 20k miles. I have almost 90k now and have never had a problem passing North Carolinas yearly emissions/Safety check. I do have a CARB sticker under the hood for mine.
K&N's kits did have a C.A.R.B. approval at one time, but I think they pulled it back since you can not find a 57 series (FIPK) kit on there web site anymore for the 4th gen 4Runners. The 63 series kit (Aircharger) are not 50 state emissions legal like the 57 series usually are.

The good news for the V6 is that it's listed as a separate part for around $35. So if V6 4Runner showed up at the dealer minor evidence of tampering is explainable... "Oh I changed it and couldn't get the little buttons to work right that's why it looks like it was messed with... " Not that that makes it right.

we've been debating about these things for years here. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find several threads, at least two of which I have taken part in. I think the general consensus is that we aren't sure removing it does anything, either good or bad. I haven't taken mine out, even though I've had it open and looked at it several times. I think someone talked about taking an air compressor to it and noticing that it blocked the airflow significantly. I'd love to see a dyno on this. Two before, and two after. Still not sure if I'll take it out.

I took mine out a couple of days ago.
1) It's only been two days but the onboard lie-o-meter has settled at 1.4mpg higher than it was.
2) As previously reported; riding with the back window down is MUCH better. It is not perfect, it can't be without installing a side exit exhaust but it's way better in terms of sulfur and ammonia smell. Why? No clue...

No probs! Believe it or not I actually have the sulfur smell with the Sequoia too. It's not as bad as the 4r though thankfully.

I just removed mine... 1.6 avg mpg better on the factory display.

Just did this. The computer recognized an immediate improvement. The range went from 253 to 276 immediately (3/4ths). I then proceeded to fill up the tank. Range was 394! Woo! I just filled up Friday and the range was 352!
Can't really tell MPG until next week.

For those decide to try to experience... Please use the old school away to check your mileage meaning filling up the gas tank at the same gas station (at the same station twice), write down the mileage...
This would be a more accurate way of checking the gas mileage otherwise it could be that the sensor is confused. I don't know how Toyota do it exactly but it's only a rough estimate and my guess is that any mod to the engine would require the sensor to be recalibrate.

The old school way reveals an average of .8mpg better over quite a while now. The onboard has settled down to indicate an average of .9-1.0 better. Once again the onboard shows 10-15% optimistic.

The HCF does not prevent particles from getting in (ie second air filter) it prevents fumes from escaping after turning the engine off??)

I'll give this mod a try! its almost like that 3rd gen deck plate. anyone got any pics on how to? I probably could do with out but I like instructions you know? I would have had a air intake but I dont know which one and I dont have the cash at this time. Thanks 4 the free mod advice!!

Thanks it took me like one minute to take it off. weird looking to me. I haven't driven my truck yet I will tomorrow on my way to school. My truck has about 60 miles left so I'll fill my tank and see what improves!:biggrin2:
