Ocmedic build thread

Post up some more pics when you get your sliders on :)

Haha I would but has to go back into the shop tomorrow to have the winch and all the lights wired up, so will make sure and post pics of the entire build when I get it back on Wednesday.

Look forward to seeing it! How exciting!

Honestly, I was a little upset with myself for putting so much into the initial build because I pretty much cleared out my account until I saw it. Now its tough to be mad at myself :bluejump:

oh you think its over... just wait you'll want more soon  lol it never ends .. but it's all awesome!

It's so true!!! It's kind of like having my Great Dane... At first he's big but then after time he doesn't look so big anymore and even bigger would be okay...
That's how I'm looking at my 4runner :)

I know the guy who welded on my sliders yesterday who I really should have had to my build told me I need front and rear lockers before I do any real offroading. Which is $4k I probably wont be able to afford for a year seeing as though Im moving out of state on Monday and starting a new life and this build put my checking account at like $5.

That is not true. On our trucks we have a locking center diff (locks power transfer to 50% front / 50% rear) and A-TRAC (computer assisted traction control / limited slip) so we come very close to true "locker" performance without paying the money. However, lockers will most definitely improve offroad performance over stock, but not required by any means.

your correct about the traction assistance from a-trac but it brings you no where close to a true locker front an rear. the center diff has the option to be open so you can use 4wd on the road and not bind up front an rear diff's when it's locked your correct you get 50/50 power to front and rear open center diff's (which open diff's have been sending power to the two wheels without traction since 1897) so you wined up with one tire up front pulling and one tire in the rear pulling. without momentum in a sticky situation your going to loose traction. I off-road very regularly and lockers are at the top of my build list (infact there going in this weekend woot woot! and yes OCMEDIC it does run about 4k with 4:56 gears)

Yeah, like I said... "close", but not quite there. My point being that it is not mandatory right away. You (and other off-roaders) will be pretty surprised at how effective the truck is without lockers. While the center diff and A-Trac don't close the gap 100% it will get you up stuff that Jeeps (and other non-toyotas) have to lock up for...

THAT GUY (Aha2988) knows for a fact what his truck is capable of doing with open diffs... I can vouch for that. He's pushed it beyond it's limits running open. I'm very interested to see what he get's into once he locks up :)

Sun Valley Idaho, Im a little nervous as its a total lifestyle change but it suits my lifestyle and interests so much better. Im all about mountain biking, rock climbing, fly fishing and anything else you can imagine. But Ive never lived anywhere where it snows often so that will take some getting used to. I'll probably have to pick up skiing or boarding so I can stay active in the winter. I surf a lot so snowboarding might be easier to pick up although Im more interested in skiing. Ive heard there is amazing 4x4ing out there in the summer so im stoked.

P.S I disabled my traction control system because it was preventing me from getting through some trails. It would cut my throttle & apply brakes while the truck was off camber.. (thats a no no in off-roading thats how your roll over when you bring down hill momentum to a stop at an off camber angle the wheels stop spinning yes but the truck doesnt some moving it continues to follow its own momentum) Superman knows about wheel stands lol... as soon as i would pick a tire up i would loose all forward momentum roll back an have to start over or roll back to a tougher line an get stuck between a rock an a hard place.

No OCmedic you dont "need" lockers to go off-road. As far as build advice what you have setup will get you through some fun trails and leave you quite impressed at the ability of the factory drive line with a little added lift. If you do go off-road however bring a wheeling partner with you (off-road rule #1 never go alone always have a recovery vehicle in your group). Everybody has opinions as to whats best for off-roading everything from axles, tires, wheels, armor, recovery gear, winches, gear ratio's, you name it and someone has a different opinion. Its best to take your truck for a trail ride and find what suits your needs the best. Yeah we can all sit here and name off the best products on the market to produce an amazing trophy truck but it all comes down to your preference, needs, and desires..

bottom line atrac works great for slow speed low rpm mild trail riding, and personally my truck has preformed even better with it disabled and my foot in control instead of the computer; however, If you want to tackle rock faces like me you'll want some lockers at least one in the rear as well lower final drive ratio's help to.

thats awesome! surfing an snowboarding are similar you just steer with the opposite end of the board from one another. just be sure to by a jacket from there for there lol.

Builds Done! Finally right. Don't have time to tell all about it at the moment have to run but here's a teaser pic.
