Well, these cars with an automatic are 4 speed (3-speed plus overdrive). So think of O/D as 4th gear. When you push the button on your shift lever and a light comes on on your dash that means that you have told the computer to limit the transmission to 3 gears (gears 1-3). No shift points are changed by using the O/D button, you just dont have 4th gear anymore.
If you want to hold the transmissions shift points higher into the RPM's you can use the ECT button. That is used for towing uphill or instances when you want the engine to hold gears into higher RPMs for more torque.:driving: This post is 100% factual and not subjective!
