OD. vs. automatic second gear

Well, these cars with an automatic are 4 speed (3-speed plus overdrive). So think of O/D as 4th gear. When you push the button on your shift lever and a light comes on on your dash that means that you have told the computer to limit the transmission to 3 gears (gears 1-3). No shift points are changed by using the O/D button, you just dont have 4th gear anymore.
If you want to hold the transmissions shift points higher into the RPM's you can use the ECT button. That is used for towing uphill or instances when you want the engine to hold gears into higher RPMs for more torque.:driving: This post is 100% factual and not subjective!

It does serve a purpose, like I said if you are driving up a 10 mile road into the mountains and will be travelling around 45 mph, if you left overdrive on you would be at a lower RPM (2000-2300) at the highest and putting more stress on the transmission. Think of trying to ride your bike up a hill in a big gear. If you were to turn overdrive off, your transmission would still be around 3000 RPM or so going up the hill but the gear would be in affect smaller so the power necessary to turn the gear is less. Hence less stressful force on the transmission. Like shifting your bike to ride up a hill. You just turn your pedals a little faster but go the same speed and it will seem like it is easier to pedal. So the O/D off can actually save you from wear on your transmission. The torque in this car is nominal in the low RPM's in 4th gear going uphill unless you are at highway speeds. O/D off will keep your transmission from searching between 3rd and 4th.
I will say I never turn mine off anymore now that I don't make that specific drive daily. Having 4th gear is essential to preserving the life of the transmission for everday driving.
So yeah you really dont need to use it 99.9% of the time. But someday you may use it once. lol

Its like when you break the chain on a dirt bike because you kept riding in the higher gears out of turns and put too much stress on chain. The torque in this car is nominal in the low RPM's in 4th gear going uphill unless you are at highway speeds.

ha i got it now! lol. no more from me. im glad i finally understand because me and my friend were always wonderin what the hell o/d was for and i would always tell him the wrong thing .
