Odometers quit working

I have a 92 4runner SE-5 that is having speedometer problems. The odometers (both trip and mileage) have quit working. The speedometer also works intermittantly at times. For example, the speedometer will read zero for the first couple of minutes and then jump to the indicated speed. Does this sound like a bad speedometer, a bad speed sensor possibly two bad speed sensors, or an ECU problem? Has anyone else experienced these issues?

Any help the forum can provide will be appreciated.

does the speedometer make noise? sounds like a bad speedometer cable or maybe the gauge itself. You could try lubricating the cable but it seems more like either the cable is broken or the gauge mechanism is tired out.
 
No noise from the speedometer. I have not pulled the gauge cluster yet, but I'm pretty sure there is not a speedometer cable. I believe that the speedometer is electric and operates off of a signal that comes from the speed sensors on the transmission that are routed thru the ECU. There are two speed sensors (one on each side of the transmission). The weather has been too cold to fool with it so I was hoping someone had experienced a similiar problem.

I pulled the gauge cluster today and as suspected there is no speedometer cable. The speedometer itself is working just not the odometers. Since the odometers are mechanical rather than electrical I believe the problem lies within the speedometer. What do you guys think?

I've checked the FSM and they don't cover the odo.

You may have to dis-assemble the cluster to get to the speedo-to-odo mechanics and check them. Something may be worn or broken.
 
I am having this issue currently, my speedometer is also all electronic. This is what I found in the FSM:

I replaced the No. 1 sensor which has the gear and the 3-prong sensor. I checked both connections and neither seem lose or whatever. I was getting a CEL for the sensor and when I replaced it I no longer get it, but alas speedometer and odometer still do not work.

I am going to assume it's my cluster but before I throw anymore money at it I wanted a sure way to test it safely.
 
The odometers are driven by a small electric motor on the back of the speedometer. There are speedometer repair services available on line that can replace this small motor or sell you an exchange speedometer with the correct mileage on the odometer for $175.00. I chose the less expensive route of buying a replacement gage cluster off of eBay for $49.00 and documenting the mileage difference on the odometers.

Did you pull it apart to find that something was broken inside? I checked for replacement clusters on eBay unfortunately for my SR5 (all optioned out) the clusters started around $75. I am not really big on keeping mileage since the previous owner had a motor swap done due to the head gasket recall.

I pulled the speedo out of the cluster and nothing obvious was broken. I located the motor on the back of the speedometer that turns the odometers. It appears the same motor runs both the trip and the main odometer. The motor is mounted with 2 small screws but I was not able to break them loose with the small screwdriver set that I had. Since I installed a replacement gage cluster I haven't made a serious effort yet to remove the motor. I'm not sure if a source for a replacement motor at a reasonable price can be found (outside the rebuild services) anyway.

Since you have an electronic speedometer, item 170301310587 on eBay should work for you.

It's been 16 years this topic was started and since the member you quoted has even been on the forum, you'll not get an answer from them!!!
