odor from heater

Hello. I bought my 2008 4Runner used. The cabin air filter had never been changed and had almost an inch of dirt in it. In the winter, there is an odor when I set it to about 70 degrees. The colder outside, the stronger the odor. It smells like burnt wires and has done this for the past few winters. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Can you pull the fan motor? Check for dirt, dead mouse. Use an inspection camera to check for dust build up. Could try ozone generator. Have the vehicle professionally detailed with hvac emphasis.

best way is to take apart the dash area, any panels that has the vents, and then just wipe all the inside duct system out. might have to do it couple of times with some soap and water. change out the filter and clean the blower motor out. the truck gets the fresh air from the cover at the windshield. take it apart and suck up and wipe out any dirt. you can try to spray some lysol and febreeze after to make sure its fresh.

I've done all that. The smell comes back every winter. I feel that something is burning up but not sure what it is.
