OEM 4runner fog light 96-98?

My truck never came with fog lights from the factory and the switch doesn’t only have to turn on fog lights. When I had a light bar on the top of my truck and also my front bumper, I used the switch to turn the both on.

When I actually installed a rack, I removed both light bars and installed 2 Baja Designs rock lights on both sides of my rack when camping or just need light on the side of the truck when it’s dark out. I’m using the factory fog light switch to turn those on.

Your '00 is pre-wired for fog lights. The right light stalk (Camry, Solara, Sienna, ES300, etc. all have compatible ones), a relay and fuse will get you fog light power at the connectors below the headlights. Put a connector on there between the '98 fogs and '99+ harness and you are done.

Just curious if you know of a way to tell which stalks will work. I see a bunch for sale online but none of them mentioned the 4Runner specifically. Also, most of them say they work up until 1999, so is the 2000 different? I found a stalk from a 2000 Celica with fogs and no drl, but the seller said they won't work on a 4Runner.

The EPC calls these out for 4Runner light control stalks:

84140-14120 W(FOG LAMP) (08/1999 - ) 1 $98.88
84140-20560 W(FOG LAMP) (07/1998 - 07/1999) 1 $98.88

Do a google search on those part numbers to see the visual difference (at the connector, the visible portion looks the same). Then compare to your truck and the parts you are looking to buy. You can remove the steering column cover with two screws to check.

Make sure the stalk does not have an "auto" light setting, just the extra 'fog' ring. At that point, it should be plug-n-play. I found Camry, Solara and Sienna parts to be the cheapest compatible parts for my '99.

I have much bigger fish to fry with this 4runner, but figured I will tackle something "easy" first, where would I find the plugs for the fog lights behind the grille? The grill is currently removed, and I don't see any extra wires where the fog lights would normally sit.

Mine is a 98 base model with basically only 4wd being optioned. It never had a connector for them. I think he is talking about post 1998 4runners.

If there was wiring there from Toyota, I would of seen it when I added my own fog lamps. The stock fog lamp switch was not even integrated into a stock pre-99. They fitted a switch (PN 0055035976) in one of the blanks. You can still get that switch for cheap btw.

If you want the stock appearance, just get some hella 450s and use the included components. The only thing you'll have to add is a fuse tap to power the primary side of the relay, and get the stock switch I mentioned since it will fit into the blanks easily and look nice.

I don't know, if you have a base model you likely have space since it wont have everything.

Honestly just use a standard DIN relay mounted somewhere by the firewall. Toyota doesn't include wiring for stuff not optioned on your vehicle, so they aren't going to include the relay

The 96-98 fog light relay was part of a stand alone Hella harness. The harness components (fuse and relay) were located between the battery and inner fender.

Not all of them had the fog light option. It’s easy to make though…..

Side note: the harness was not wired correctly the two power feeds (hot wires) need swapped for it to properly feed power to the lamps.

Pyral has a 98 so his is not prewired for fog lights. 99 and newer came prewired.

Yes, the relay location for the fog lights is there, and empty of course, but there is definitely no wiring behind the bumper or grill. And I highly doubt the previous owner removed it.

The fog light wiring will be near the turn signal wiring (in the bumper). Follow the turn signal wiring harness back a bit and see if there is another set of wires and empty connector coming off of it.

Yep, I pretty much traced the wires all the way back to the fuse box and can't find anything, so I'm assuming the base model just didn't come with them.

Also, a bit of clarification on my post:

My 4runner is a 2000 base model. I like the 98 bumper way better so I purchased a used bumper and it just happened to come with the hella fog lights. I really have no use for fog lights, but figured since they were there I would make them work. My plan was to buy the headlight stalk, a relay, and splice the wires from the Hellas onto the factory fog light connector that's on the truck, but I am missing those completely.

A few weeks ago a guy was selling the harness for the Hellas on eBay.. I will probably just pick that up, but I'm pissed because I already bought the headlight stalk too. And on my 4runner, the relay location is in the fuse box but the only thing I don't see are the actual connectors up front.

Do you see any clips in the relay socket that the blades would push into? You’d either see none or just the two for the coil wires.

Good question, I haven't looked but I will check that when I am near the 4Runner tonight. I was actually just going to ask about that actually. I'm assuming if I don't see the eclipse, then the wiring isn't there for the front connectors?
