OEM exhaust question

The exhaust on my 95 Landcruiser was stainless steel and was in great shape when I traded it after 9 years and around 140K miles. I was wondering if the exhaust on my new 2004 4runner Sport V8 4x4 was also made of Stainless?

I hear you but no consenus over there and someone said they would check but never got back with an answer. I don't have a magnet and was hoping someone on this site would know the answer???

Just checked my SR5, it's NOT stainless.

Magnet will NOT prove it.

Most stainless steels are magnetic. But some are not. No iron content, uses high nickel content instead.
I work with SS alloys all day long in the shop. I have encountered NONE that were non-magnetic. SS alloys have BETTER anti-corrosion properties than steel alloys, but again, it depends on the alloy.

Another 'myth' debunked..........

Where I work, we use a lot of stainless components in our machines, and I can't recall any of them that were magnetic. We must be using the 'special' stuff. Thanks for the info.

That's what i thought...my '02 4runner has stainless steel exhaust.

I still cannot believe that the 4th gen does not have SS exhaust. I need to check into that.

I talked to a Toyota parts manager today and he said that it was or had stainless in it? I started this question since my 95 Landcruiser was stainless, my Lexus LS400, SC400 were also stainless. I figured that Toyota/Lexus must use stainless in all of their exhaust systems since even my 1984 Toyota 4x4 that I had over 180K miles on when I sold it in 1994 never had a rusted exhaust system even though it spent most of it's life on salty midwest roads (so I figured it must of had a good amount of stainless content). If these things are not stainless why do they hold up so well???
