OEM Foglight Question

I have a 2002 4Runner SR5 that did not come with the fog light switch on the stalk. I bought some OEM fogs and want to have them come on when I turn my headlights on. Can I wire them into the headlight wiring or will that not work? I don't want to run a separate switch if I don't have to. I do have the factory connectors behind the bumper, but there is no relay in the fuse box for the fogs.

I don't know much about electrical work so if someone could help me with this I would be grateful.

With electrical work, really anything is POSSIBLE.

That said, I think you'd be much happier buying a stalk with the fog switch and not hacking up your factory lighting. ( DeathCougar probably has one...)

Thanks for the Mention A.Wilson013

I do not have just the switch at this time, I have a complete foglight setup with HID's and the switch.

I appreciate the responses guys but I don't want to buy a $70 stalk just to have a fog light button. Besides, I want them to come on at the same time i turn my headlights on without having to turn another switch. There has got to be a way to wire them in succession with the headlights.

I don't know much about electrical either, but I do know that if it's wired like Runners that come with factory fogs they will turn on and off with the headlights if you leave the switch in the on position - they will not stay on if you have your headlights off unless modified to do so.

Soooo if I were trying to do this I would do it like this. It may not be perfect, but it would work.

I would use an add-a-circuit in an open fuse location

I would run the wire off of the add-a-circuit to a 4 pin relay. (I would use a waterproof one, and keep it in the engine bay)

I would run another wire off of the relay and onto the positive wire on the lights (I'd use 12 ga, because that's what I have lying around)

I would run another wire from the relay to the low beam lights (for the switched power) (I'd use 12 ga, because that's what I have lying around)

I would run the 4th wire to a ground. (I'd use 12 ga, because that's what I have lying around)

And of course ground the negative wire off of the lights.

I WOULD STILL JUST BUY THE STALK, BUT THIS WILL WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT

I have attached the wiring diagrams for Fog Lights and DRL's for a 2002. The fact that the headlights are energized in turn for high and low and the ground is on also when DRL's are on makes it complicated. You would have to rewire the coil side of the fog relay (Pin 2) so that it picked up ground from somewhere along the red-yellow wire from the stalk switch at Pin 13 to the gauge cluster at Pin 1 of Plug c27. You would have to bring this tap forward through the firewall to the FOG relay in the engine bay. This is the only way I see to have the fogs come only with either high or low beams but not DRL's. You could then supply the coil 12V+ (Pin 1) from the FOG fuse, which is already at the contact side of the FOG relay at Pin 5.

Or, you could do the same thing with an add-on aux. fog relay if that is easier to wire.

I appreciate the docs Durk but that's beyond my level of comprehension. I guess I will have to just buy the stalk since my electrical knowledge is nil. The lights should be here tomorrow so I will install them, put a relay in the fuse panel and see if they come on when I turn on the headlights. I disabled my DRL's a while ago so I'm not concerned with the fogs coming on that way.

See if you have ground at Pin 2 of that relay (I suspect you won't until you get your new stalk). If you ground that Pin 2, then at least they will come on with lows only until you get the stalk with Fog switch. Without that ground, relay will not energize and lights will not come on.

You should have mentioned the DRL disable. That changes the whole picture.

I don't think anyone has suggested this yet, but I feel that adding a switch would be easier. I don't have a fog light switch on my stalk either, and had the factory wires at the fog light like you do. It's what I did, (I think) it fits all your criteria, and it works great.

I simply added the fog light relay (bought a new one) and put it in. Then I took a fog light switch (see my build thread for some pictures) and wired that up to the existing wiring. It's as simple as splicing in 2 wires onto existing wiring.

They work only with the headlights- you can leave the switch on, and the fog lights will only turn on when they are on- and go off with them going off. They are also off when the high beams are on.

Let me know if you are interested in this and I can try to get some more information for you!

That switch would just go from Pin 2 of the relay (or the black/red wire from the relay to the stalk switch) to ground. My suggestion just left out the switch. So not easier.

Ohhhh, now I'm understanding what you're saying. My mistake. I like this suggestion now!

I didn't mention it because I didn't know it was relevant. How does it change anything? That stalk is just too costly so I don't know if I'm gonna go that route now or not.

Because then your lights are only on when you physically turn them on. I would still add a switch to your fogs. You can get a cheap switch and just pop it right into one of the blank spots on your dash to the left of your steering wheel.

I got the fogs in on Wednesday and installed them. I put the power outlet relay in the fog light relay slot totest and nothing happened. I suspect because it is not grounded as TheDurk said? Anybody got the part number for the fog light relay? It should be a Denso 12v relay, correct?

It seems like you're making this way too complicated. Why not just wire in a simple Bosch-style Relay and be done with it? Use an in-cab switch to switch ground triggering the relay. See image below...I would NOT run 12V through the manual switch, but instead run the ground through the switch....so basically have pin 86 be your manually switched ground and pin 85 be a switched hot (ACC) from anywhere (these relays pull almost no amps for the breaker, so you don't have to worry about popping fuses if it's done correctly). It sounds like this would be your best bet...and super cheap as these relays can be found at any Auto Parts store. It sounds like you're not super saavy on the electrical stuff and that's OK, this is as straight forward as you can get, and probably the cheapest option to do it safely and correctly. Be sure to size the fuse from the battery feed correctly for your fogs...someone else may chime in here as to the correct amperage of that fuse (15A shown in diagram below).

FWIW, I pulled a light switch with fog light control at my salvage yard thinking that when I eventually added fog lights I could just swap it with the "non-fog light" switch. On my 2001 SR5, the switch with fog light was NOT the same as the one without fog light. The switch WITH the fog light control was bigger than the one that did not have the fog light control. You need the entire "widget" (I have NO idea what that is called) that the fog light switch gets connected to behind the steering wheel. I'm out of town, so I can't provide any pics at the moment, but I'll get some added when I get a chance.

That's interesting to know. I'd like to see what you are talking about. Are you saying that something like this will not work and additional parts are necessary? I don't want to do the stalk because it's costly but if it's just a plug n play thing I reckon I will bite the bullet.
