OEM NAV Calibration Problems

What's the latest database version that has been released? I believe someone said version 6.1 is the newest that was released in September (from the Sienna boards). Also, what generation nav do I have in my 06 Ltd? The model is E7008. How can you tell what gen it is? Also from the Sienna boards someone said the new disc from the TSB only has new software/firmware...it is not the latest map database. Anyone with the new disc from TSB confirm this?

The nav generation has been a "stump the chump" thing to me. I've been trying to figure out exactly what is which gen. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my guess:

1st, HD based (I think only found on Lexus cars 98-00).
2nd, DVD based with a seperate ECU for the DVD-ROM (on 4R's the ones with a tape deck, upto '04).
3rd, DVD based all-in-one unit (for Toyotas, no tape deck, dual disc slots one CD and the other for DVD, '04-05).
4th, DVD based all-in-one with Bluetooth (for Toyotas, '06+).
5th, DVD based with Bluetooth and TrafficNav (I think currently only on Lexus models).

Toto - thanks for the great info on the Nav system TSB. Unfortunatly, I am having a tough time obtaining the update disk. The dealers which I have spoken to say that I need to duplicate the problem, or pay $$ for the update disk. It's difficult to duplicate the gps issus, as it shows me in the wrong location only once in awhile.
My rig is a 2006 with 11,000 miles, and should be covered under warranty.
Any suggestions for obtaining the fix? I even gave the dealers the TSB # (EL012-06), and they said they cannot find it in their system, thus this TSB is invalid for my situation.
Thanks!

Try talking to the service manager(s) if haven't already. I have an appointment on Tuesday morning with my dealer concerning this TSB. When I called I was told that the problem would have to be occurring during my appoinment for them to do anything. I told them this was unlikely to happen. So I talked to the service manager and explained the problem and my concern and he said no problem. As long as my vehicle qualifies for the TSB, which is does, they will perform the TSB. He said the problem does not have to be occurring as it is an intermediate problem. I will let you guys know what happens on Tues.

Good luck Michael, I hope it works out.

I had a similar problem to what you described with the A/C magnetic clutch relay for my Camry. Service manager said it was ok, fine and dandy, he'll replace it per the TSB. However, when I got there, this jack@$$ service writer says, they don't do it cause I want them to and the problem has to occur. I was pissed off after dropping the car off thinking I've wasted my time and they won't do squat, I was about ready to write to the owner and Toyota corporate, but when I went to get the car back they did replace it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I have done substantial web research on the Override problem - so far no good news. As far as anyone knows there is no way to get to the service screen where you can enable the override on this new v5 of the software. The http://www.coastaletech.com/ products are evidently not yet updated to work with this new version either.

Still desperate for a solution - it's horrible not being able to enter destinations or find things while driving.

Got an update guys. I took my 4runner in last Tuesday and they had the TSB in their system. The service writer said OK no problem and will run service by service manager. Next day service manager called and said Denso wanted more information about my problem before issuing the disc. My problem was that the NAV would lose my position and start drifting about a mile or so off. This seemed to occur when the "GPS" label was not on the screen. Eventually it would come back. He said OK and would get back to me.

He called me today and said the problem I am having is normal and they will not give me the disc. The service manager talked to Denso and the local Toyota rep. and they said the disc is for when the NAV shows your correct location one minute and then shows you FAR AWAY from your location, such as another state. My problem was normal as the NAV uses GPS signals and Dead Reckoning to determine location. When the unit loses the GPS signal, it goes to Dead Reckoning mode where it uses general direction and speed to estimate your location. However this is not very accurate and losing your position is normal. When the system regains the GPS signal it show correct location and everything is back to normal. So I am SOL and have to live with my problem. They could not answer what is causing the NAV unit to lose the GPS signal, even on clear days in open areas.

Can anyone else provide details about the problems they are having (mile or so off or hundreds of miles) and if they got a new disc?

briandunning......you got a new disc. Can you describe what problems you were having before you got the disc? Was your system jumping from your current location to some where else many, many miles away?

Yes sir. Exactly the same problem as yours. Once the GPS signal is lost, it starts to drift away, farther and farther. How far depends on how long it stays off. Mine would typically be off for about a week, by which time it would be wrong by a few hundred miles. Then it would come back on and be correct for about a month. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I got my new disc from Family Toyota in San Juan Capistrano, CA. They had no problem giving it to me. But losing the Override function has been very painful. I would almost be willing to live with the old problem in order to be able to fully use the system the rest of the time.

Thanks Brian for the info. It seems you fit into the category of people the disc was made for.

I have started to look into my problem a little more and went to the Sienna thread that TKR128 linked to on the first page of this thread and found the following post....

Had the same problem with our 06 Nav, would not get the 'GPS' indication on the map screen. Went to the diag screen to check the GPS signal and saw that the system only saw 1 or 2 satellites, very weak signal. Thought it was something with our area and bad sat signals. Went to the dealer (1 mile away) to buy a van for my SIL and got in a new van with a nav. Did the same check and saw 8 sats, all with strong signals. Went straight home did the same test on my van and saw the same 1-2 sats, weak signal. Tried turning things on/off, eject disk, etc. No change. Finally went back to the diag screen and did a reload ('Loading' button) of the firmware. Took about 20 seconds to load, screen said something like "Loading, do not turn off power". When the reload was done, the system rebooted. Check sat signal again, saw 8 sats!!!. Seems like reloading of the firmware and reboot fixed whatever was the problem. Been working fine now for 5 days. I was glad this worked as I did not want to go to the new version and loose the override function.

It does seem that my problem has gotten worse over time. On my way home tonight I watched the GPS signals and the NAV was reading 4 satellites. But any 1 of them would drop out for a few seconds and them come back. So I was only reading 3, which is the minimum for location, quite a bit. The unit can read up to 8 satellites. I am planning on doing the firmware reset as above to see what happens. But first I am going to jot down my programmed info (presets, phone numbers, addresses, etc.) as I would not be surprised all of this is deleted with a reset. Also the error log was 4 pages, but it is all codes and pretty useless to me.

I did the reset as described on the Sienna boards and it's been working like a charm for 10 days now. Haven't lost the "GPS" indicator yet. My problem was exactly the same as described on the Sienna boards...I'd only receive 3 or 4 satellites and I guess the system couldn't lock in. Did the reset and got 7 satellites. For those that didn't go with the new software, try the reset as you will still have the ability to go into the diagnostic screens. I'll keep you posted if any troubles occur.

Bob....Good news about your NAV! When you do the reset.....does the reset delete all your presets (radio, addresses, phone numbers, etc.)? I am just wondering if I have do some reprogramming after reset. Thanks!

Doing the reset did not affect any of the other settings except for map orientation...I always leave mine set for travelling "up" on the map rather than "north" being in the up posistion. After doing the reset it went back to north up. Naturally just touching the compass puts it back to my preferred setting. Nothing else was changed or deleted. It appears the reset is a good thing!

I just bought an 06 and it's on the fritz driving 12k cross country, so buying a disc for the trip is out of the ?, cause I'm not going to buy a brand new one at the dealership for $200+!!

Anyway I finally figured out how to get to the diagnostic screen as described above...but I don't see a "loading" button to reload the firmware. Any suggestions??
