Off-road options close to Altadena?

Do you know if that water crossing in Azusa Cyn off-road park mandatory? I am not yet ready to take the truck headlights deep like I am seeing in some of the photos of the place.

Yes it is. That's the only way in and out of that park. No way around it.

With the storm, it's pretty deep right now. Wait a week or two to go. Hit up Cleghorn should be ok.

As we are on the subject, I know the air intake is about headlight high on passenger side. But then I see diff breather mods and such. Without those, is it safe to do water crossings? When are those additional mods necessary?

I live close by Eaton Cyn in Altadena and the water is flowing hard and fast at this time so now would not be a good time to try Azuza Cyn Try after this weekend and yes you do have to cross water to gain entry. I did it myself in my 2016 stock Trail Premium(with the crappy tires) and it was very capable. I have since gotten Wildpeak AT3s! Your vehicle is extremely capable as is, so before you start with the ridiculous "mods" and add ons, use it,play with it and see what it and you can do and then make informed decisions.

Hey that's awesome. That's a popular hiking area. Any spots you like to go to close by for light off-roading?
Azusa Canyon would be a good spot, while you do have to do the river crossing to get to the trail and get to the mud, they also have a rock crawling area before the river crossing that you can use to get your feet wet. I personally have not tried this section of the Azusa Canyon Offroad area but sure beats doing the paved road thing.
The reality is other than Azuza Cyn there is nothing close to our general area --you are going to have to travel! The OHV area at Gorman is an excellent area to put your vehicle through its paces and try all the "assists" to your 4wd system.There are several areas from total beginner to more advanced and it covers many thousands of acres.Take the Gorman exit off the 5 and follow the signs.Bring a cooler and provisions and go early and have a fun learning experience.Nothing beats "saddle time". Midweek is best -less people.
