Mine were done when my axle seals went and I stupidly let myself get bent over at the dealership. So, mine will be good for a while. I would love to do rear brakes on somebody's rig though.

I would also like to be involved in someone doing a wiring job for accessory lighting or whatever. I've never messed with automotive electrical and it would be a good learning experience. I just wouldn't want to learn while working on somebody's truck. Somebody else with experience would have to be in charge because there's too much that could go wrong like shorting out important electrical components or starting a fire.

I will be wiring my winch and light bars in my custom bumper soon. We could meet at Sean's place and do it there, and I can show you how I wire stuff. Its easier for me already since I have a blue sea fuse box already but I need to do lots of rewiring anyways.

Hey everyone, I'm in Oakland and I'm trying to put a new motor in my 280,000 mile 99 runner. The current motor was rebuilt when I bought the truck, and they must have done a bad job. She has a blown head gasket. The motor has eaten a lot of coolant and has a pretty aggressive knock that I've ignored for a few months in anticipation of being able to afford a replacement. My girlfriend and I have been hired to work in Skagway, Alaska for the Summer and we're supposed to leave on the 26th, so I'm having a low level panic attack about getting this truck sorted out.

My mechanic found a motor with 190,000 on it for $1300, which neither of us feels good about. I also have limited experience with this mechanic.

I love this truck and want to keep her going as long as possible. We bought her about six months ago and have put over 20,000 on the odometer driving around Northern California. Any help is appreciated. I've checked out car-part.com, but I'm hoping some locals can give me some direction.

You literally have my old 4Runner just as i built it... ARB, MTR kevlars on pro comp wheels..old man EMU shocks i still see.... my Thule racks.. it even has my silly quarter panel emblems of "unn" and "ER".. basically a "4runner" emblem chopped up..... is the JL audio sub still in the back>???.....

In any event.. You can get motors with 1/2 that mileage on eBay...

Or from Sacramento for about $1000



PS. I sold this truck about 2.5 years ago with the head gasket issue.. Mileage on it then was 265,000

I had the engine replaced at 200k by melody Toyota back in 2009. That cost me $4,500

Pretty wild. I talked to infamousRNR on the phone last night and learned about the history of my truck. Thanks to everyone who's offered information. I'm going to try and make something happen this week.

"Engine World" in Emeryville has JDM motors, I dont have experience with them but my office used to be on the same street and I have walked in their shop a couple of times. It seems JDM motors are slightly hit or miss, but I have heard good things about this place. They also have a shop that they work with thats in the are to do the swaps.
There is also a guy in Sacramento that has an engine with a supercharger and 7th injector that and other goodies (i think he said it was rebuilt or new heads) he sounds a little shady but he wrecked his 4runner and he wants to sell the engine and SC for ~2400 he didnt have a price figured out when I spoke to him but he probably will be willing to make a deal. Hi Bay Area folks. I am still frantically searching for a truck and I went to see this one this morning: Toyota 4 Runner 2000

It's in great condition and there are no real issues (the gas pedal seemed a bit spongey). The guy selling seems genuine.

The odometer reads 131k and he says he's out about 6k on since he bought it 6 months ago. He's moving across country (and I saw evidence of this). Any I agreed to buy it and gave him a $500 deposit but I just ran carfax on it and it's listed as 225k. That's a little worrying. Not sure what to do with that as I have heard of mistakes with carfax.

Should I walk away (after getting my deposit back)?

Sorry to hear this! I know it has been a long search, YES get your deposit back and walk away there will be other 4runners without mileage fraud and you will find a better one.

Be careful shopping on Craigslist. I've run into so many fraudulent ads it's ridiculous. They usually put up a too good to be true price based off condition and mileage and collect a bunch of interested people. Then they email you a few days later with some bogus story and want you to send them money via Money Gram. I freaking hate thieves with a passion. May they all die a miserable death.

Suspension replace

Anyone have any suggestions on where to go to get suspension replaced? I will be ordering all the parts, but don't have the tools, know how, or space in my college apartment to tackle it myself. A local mechanic here gave me a quote of $280 which doesn't seem terrible considering the last quote i got was $450+

Shocks and springs all around. Replacing original 201k mile with 99 talls up front, 906 in the back, 5100s on all 4 corners.

Is it recommended that you extend the brake lines with this sort of lift? I just replaced my rear springs today with the ones for a 99 and I gained a huge 1" lift. I probably should have done what you're doing and got the 906's in the back but I wanted to keep my rig close to stock.

This sounds like a worthy project to video. I replaced all my shocks last year but I didn't video it. Let me talk with my partner in crime Sean (aka infamousRNR) to see what he thinks. We could probably hook you up doing it at my place and I have all the tools we need to getter dun. All we would require is some tasty IPA's.

You wont need extended lines with this lift. They really only become effective with 3+ inches of lift there are even many people with 4 inches of lift running LC coils that have gotten away with just bending the bracket connecting the solid line to the flexible one above the rear axle. Of course its nice for piece of mind if you have a 3" lift (and really long shocks) but its not necessary.
