Is it recommended that you extend the brake lines with this sort of lift? I just replaced my rear springs today with the ones for a 99 and I gained a huge 1" lift. I probably should have done what you're doing and got the 906's in the back but I wanted to keep my rig close to stock.

This sounds like a worthy project to video. I replaced all my shocks last year but I didn't video it. Let me talk with my partner in crime Sean (aka infamousRNR) to see what he thinks. We could probably hook you up doing it at my place and I have all the tools we need to getter dun. All we would require is some tasty IPA's.

I was looking at staying mostly stock, but figured if i was gunna do it i'd get a little extra lift. the 99s up front are supposed to be a good pairing with the 906s. The shocks took a little more research but in the end the 5100's seemed the best choice.

The only difference is mine is a 4cyl, which according to one person i've seen here (cant remember who), means the 99 talls lift even higher because of the lighter engine, but im not sure. Im just hoping it wont make my tiny tires seem smaller.

What year is your truck? Is it 2x4 or 4x4?

Sean and I are game to help you out. Our price is beers and lunch on you and your willingness to let us video the job. We're not the quickest mechanics but we'll get the job done right and we'll torque everything to the proper spec. We will most likely have you sign some sort of generic release of liability too because we're not professional mechanics and we don't carry insurance in case something breaks that was out of our control during the repair or something fails down the road causing an accident and then somebody decides they want to sue us for everything we got. I'm sure you can understand that we need to protect ourselves because our society is seriously sue happy and we don't know you, yet.

So, if you're willing to provide beers and lunch and willing to sign a release of liability so we are protected, we'd love to help you out and video the job so we can share it with other 3rd Gen owners.

It's a 96 model which I pick up tomorrow so I can post more then. For a start I want to get it fully serviced. All fluids checked all major components gone over etc. I also need to replace the windscreen.

Going forward I want to change out the shocks and suspension, get new wheels and tires. Some of it I can do myself but I would like to get everything done professionally at the start.

I had AMG performance in Fremont do my engine replacement and tranny rebuild. Came with a three year-unlimited mile warrantee on both.

Are you in San Francisco? If so I'd suggest Waylon at The Toy Shop on Geary. I know about four Toyota Tacoma/4Runner owners and we wouldn't take our trucks anywhere else.

I've had Waylon and his guys check my 99 model out from top to bottom. Also had them install shocks and springs, replace the upper and lower ball joints, and replace the radiator. Bunch of other little things too.

Waylon is usually booked up 1 1/2-2 weeks in advance, but it's worth it.

As for wheels and tires, I'd recommend Paul's Tires. It's only about three blocks from The Toy Shop. I had them replace the tires my truck came with (I bought it from the Toyota SF dealership last July) with Toyo Open Country ATs. Also had them do an alignment. Appointments are generally next-day things.

well i would do all that stuff myself....

personally changing fluids replacing spark plugs and wires is not something I'm prepared to pay someone to do...

save money
do it yourself
that way you can make sure you do it right,....

and always use OEM parts whenever possible to avoid having to do it a 2nd time


i've lost a lot of faith in the "professionals" ....

even they mess up sometimes... if i do it myself i can ensure i spend the time needed to do it right the first time
