Looks like i might not be able to make it. My tranny took a large shit on me this morning out of no where. Heard a whirring sound that progressively got louder then POP! Rig coasted in drive as if it was in neutral. Once i pulled over; any gear i put it into wouldnt move. I can just hear the tranny grinding like it's slipping. Same symptoms as sean [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] experienced too. Looks like ill he patiently waiting for tims [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] new video. Reman tranny cost about 2400 and used is about 5-700 from salvage yards in sac

Wife wants me to get a new car because of our infant. A 5th gen sounds like its calling my name but i love my rig too much..

Do not sell your 3rd Gen. I'm willing to help you do the swap and I imagine others will step up too. [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I have the know-how and the tools to get the job done. If we tag team it, we can have the swap done in one day. You'll be buying a shit load of beer, lunch and dinner for the crew but it's better than doing it all by yourself or paying a shop to do it.

Wow that blows. Hopefully you can salvage it and throw another trans in there. Although the 5th gems are super nice but that car payment.

Contacted a number of dealerships like sean did and got quoted 2400 +tax for a new reman.

She gave me the green light for a new taco or 4rnr but like rob said its another payment. So not really feelin paying 40k for a new rig. Beer, lunch, and dinner is no problem for all the help from you guys! I was quoted 850 for a shop to install it too.

Well, it's appearing the 01 and 02 owners can add the transmission as a common failure point, just like the balljoints. Kind of a bummer since it's a major component and fairly expensive to replace but it's definitely worth replacing it if your engine still has relatively low miles and your rig is in good shape like yours is.

Sean got his in San Bruno at Melody Toyota. He talked them down to selling him a remanned for $2200. Maybe you could do the same.

So, you have Sean and I willing to help you and maybe we could find a 4th. We won't be able to keep 4 people busy at all times but it will be nice to take a break and let somebody else crawl around on their back for a while so you can grab a beer and a snack.

Of course you're welcome to hang out with the Bay Area 3rd Gen Gang. I don't know how much wrenching you're going to watch Sean and I do, but you'll definitely see us doing some drinking and BBQ eating.

I probably wont part her out but fix her and sell her. Since ive purchased,
Ive done all the necessary maintenance. Its really unfortunate that the tranny gave away but it makes more sense why it almost overheated a couple of days after i bought it from the PO a couple of years ago. It mustve had pink milkshake at one point but i took a look it was fresh tranny fluid but i still flushed it, installed new oem radiator, cap, fan clutch, b&m tranny cooler, and tstat for good measure.

Should i decide to sell her ill he putting up my SC for sale seperately though. BUT i really want to keep my rig. I freakin love that truck i was about to pull the trigger on a rear CBI bumper too. Just got to convince my wife its stillsafe enough for the kids assuming nothing else major happens after the tranny swap.

I definitely agree since i experienced the same exact symtoms as sean. Its seriously a shitty feeling since i babies my rig. I think ill be able to make it to the meetup though. Ill keep you posted on the tranny situation but will most likely get a reman from the stealership.

The pink milkshake could definitely cause your trans to slip but I'm not so sure you could attribute a mechanical failure like you had to having your trans fluid contaminated with engine coolant. Sounds like to me you had the same failure Sean had which is a bearing that the overdrive planetary gear runs on. John at IPT Performance told me that's the weak point in the 01 and 02 transmissions since he's seen many of them with this failure come through his shop.

Man sorry to hear about that. Normally those big ticket items on vehicles of this age get hard to swallow. But for a 3rd Gen 4Runner it's a different equation I think. Since they are of no real market value (but have extreme personal value and can't even close, be replaced for what you'd get for it) to begin with it's not like you'd even get much for a trade-in and even less if it needs major mechanical. If you can still swing getting a new vehicle as your wife approved the PO already, consider still hanging onto the Runner and fixing it as time and $$ allow then you have a dedicated fun-time-only rig! Not that you probably haven't thought all this through to begin with but just my $0.02 FWIW. Hope to see you on the 13th.
