Just stumbled across this thread as well but I strongly suggest any fitness NOOBs (noob check: younger than 25 or still in HS?)
Brian, I respect you far too much to jump on you about this. Lets not be too ignorant though. That's a rather broad generalization.
I do agree with everything else you said, however.
A lot of the guys I work with eat very healthy, and then forget all the crap that's in their delicious protein and preworkouts... I think that's a pretty common mistake.
In regards to cardio- Being in the Army I was running at least 5 miles on weekdays, and many many more on the weekends with my wife. It was nearly impossible for me to make any mass gains with that... I switched over to just doing HIIT for cardio a few times a week and am honestly in the best shape of my life. Granted- I probably couldn't run a marathon right now, but my 2 mile time (all that's required in the Army) has actually improved.
On another thought, I am VERY surprised that no Crossfit fan boys have chimed in here telling us how lifting weights is bad and flailing around on a pullup bar is the only way to get in shape =p (I am kidding, I respect anyone who goes out of their way to try and better themselves physically.)
